collection of online high school ultimate videos...

so the extremely observant and extremely constant readers of the site may have already noticed the yellow box located on the lower right hand of the screen (scroll on down a little).

well now that little yellow box is becoming hopefully one of the most complete indices of high school ultimate videos that can be found online. anything we can find will be added to that link. and we welcome your help in this regard, if you know of any high school videos that are out there, feel free to post a link em as a comment to this thread.

if you have videos sitting on your computer (that you have the rights to yada yada legal stuff) feel free to upload em to YouTube or GoogleVideo or something like that and then send us a link.

anything that is online (and relatively appropriate) we will link to, hopefully over time we will have a sizeable collection of videos from over the years, and i expect it to be interesting for those who take the time to see the progression of the sport in the high school forum through the videos.

ah dreams. so for your browsing convenience i have also copied and pasted the links we already currently have after the fold...

HS Ultimate Videos

2006
additions coming soon

2005
Needham Fall Highlights (Mass.)
Neshaminy Llamas trailer (Philly)

SJP vs. William Tennent (Philly)
SJP vs. North Penn & LCDS (Philly)

2004
additions coming soon

Going to College

Hey all -
this is my first post on this blog, so let me just identify myself, since I have nothing to hide, but I do sometimes have obvious biases. I'm Miranda Roth from Atlanta, GA, played for Paideia High School, then Carleton College, then University of Washington. I now play for Seattle Riot, coach University of Washington and Seattle Moho. I also am an assistant coach for the US junior girls team and have coached Seattle Hyak at YCC.
Ok, now that that's out, what I want to talk about is: how important is ultimate in the decision of where to go to college? Where are the best high school players going these days? Do you talk to other players about college and try to go the same place? When I graduated from high school, the first person to recommend Carleton to me was Michael Baccarini, my ultimate coach. I knew that there were three Amherst girls going there and one Madison girl as well plus a Nashville girl (they are still some of my best friends) and we knew that we would play together for four years. The opportunities I had to play in college were a huge part of my college experience and it would have been silly for me to NOT consider this in my college decision.
What is like today? What is recruiting like? In Seattle, there has been a recent trend of high school players staying within the state to go to Western Washington, University of Washington or even neighboring University of Oregon. Is there an attraction to staying near home - perhaps to play with your high school teammates, to continue playing with a local club team, etc?
I would love to know these things since I am involved at high school, college and club levels.
This is the time when kids begin to hear back from colleges for next fall and it will be very interesting to see where this very talented group of high school seniors end up and which high school rivals will be college teammates.

click the "continue reading" link for as much detailed information as you can possibly handle at one time about these guys... (names that are italicized and bolded above we have something to say about)

ps - we will update this post regularly as we gain more information about those accepted from our contributors and your comments.

Brennenborg, Chris - coming from Western PA's own PHUL, Chris is definitely a worthy choice for these tryouts. He has played on the Pittsburgh club team - Burgh - in the past year, where i had the chance to watch him play at club regionals in Virginia. Very active and aggressive mark, and also a significantly dangerous handler, cuts are quick, and from what i saw he had the energy and stamina to hang on defense with some of the better club players in the mid-atlantic region.

Burnim, Sam - Sam has gotten aLOT of hype over at rsd this past fall college season. he is currently playing for Maryland in the mid-atlantic region, which i had the chance to play against at the uDel SHOWdown tournament this fall. I matched up against him for a few of the points, and learned a decent amount about him. His cuts, are relatively well placed and timed, but general speed on the cuts is not at the level of alot of these other guys. At the tryouts i imagine sam will rely on his handling skills to get him a nod for the team. Simply put, a lot of his throws are rediculous, it will be interesting to see, though, how an active mark and good strike calls have an affect on that.

Fast, Harrison - one of our contributors here at PlayUltimate, Harrison plays for Cherry Creek HS in Colorado. His team made it to HS Westerns this past year which is definitely saying something.

Hollingworth, Andrew
- one of our own contributors, hailing from Amherst, Mass. and if you play high school ultimate or follow the scene, you know what that means. He's good.

Ip, Andrew - great player from Wissahickon in PHUEL, all around athletic, tall and a solid deep, he was forced into a bit of a handler season last year because of personell issues at Wiss, but i doubt this had a negative affect on his overall game. Biggest mistake? wasting a year of eligibility by going to Penn State, which is still suspended until at least next year i believe? either way, his height is a huge asset coming in somewhere at around 6' 2" his high release backhand is downright annoying to defend.

Lahey, Taylor -
Bay Area's Finest. Senior from Castro Valley High, California. Has played with Las Positas College for at least 2 years, played with the Oakland Oaks OPEN Club team last season. Taylor is fast, he gets open easy with perfectly timed cuts. Probably the smartest guy I've ever played with, he is always exactly where he needs to be on the field, never in the way, or standing still. Sick handler, rarely turns the disc, and he has a huge backhand.

Peters, Eddie
- CB East's own, hailing from Doylestown area in the Philadelphia suburbs Eddie is ruling the skys in PHUEL, i matched up against him in our quarterfinal game of PHUEL city champs and literally the first 5 or six points were back and forth full lengths of the field deep huck on O to him in the end zone and then he was forced to play D the other way on long hucks. By the 3rd or 4th back and forth 70 yard sprint, i was starting to breath a little heavier, but Eddie was barely breaking rythm. Very spirited player, and also very fundamentally sound under the coaching of Rob Olson. Spring Phuel All-Star 2005

Pitts, Darden - ive watched some of his play from a DVD of youth club natties last year, and hes quite good. coming from Amherst, its expected. but further than this Darden played for DOG last year. Yes, as in the open club team that was in the quarterfinals against the Seattle Sockeye. He's tall, he's quick, and he gets low on his backhands.

Saul, Noah
- currently a junior at Pennsbury high school in the Philadelphia area, helped take his team to quarterfinals in the PA state championship last year, and semifinals of PHUEL city champs. a solid cutter, very fast, very prone to layouts. fundamentally sound - his older brother, reuben played in PHUEL in its very early days and arguably started one of the leagues inherent legacies with his brothers Noah and now Isaac who is a freshman now. Spring PHUEL All-Star 2005

Sung, Matt -
Another savage from Castro Valley HS, played with Las Positas for at least two years. I know he played Club last season, but not sure where. Matt is probably the sickest handler from the West Coast (if not, he's very close behind Eli Janin), he can put the disc wherever he wants. Breaks marks with ease, master of every throw and he's pretty quick. Matt is also one of the nicest players I know, usually smiling and joking throughout games.

more will be updated as the day progresses, and as we learn more about those who will be traveling to tryouts.

congratulations though to all who have been selected.

so im relying on all of you out in reader land to give us the low down on the ladies (and im sure our more knowledgeable contributors on this subject will chime in as well)

junior worlds thread...

we have a whole slew of things waiting for you in the coming few weeks, rundowns, previews, polls etc.

but for the time being in the high school ultimate world the biggest news are the tryouts for the junior national team which will participate in worlds, held this year in massachussettes

thus an open thread for your debate, discussion etc. who do you know who was accepted? who should have gotten the nod? etc

we are working on getting a complete list of those who got invitations to the tryouts, hopefully that will come within the next few days. but for now - conjecture!

yay more maps!!

lets be honest, who doesnt love maps?? the three i have for you today... the states who had a fall season this year, then our current coverage of states, a map which shows by time zone where people are visiting the site from, and then an interactive map (c/o frappr!) which shows where some of our readers come from.

so without further ado...

and then our current coverage....

and then our current visitors, by time zone...

^^ thats the only map that is kinda bugging me, we gotta get the left coast goin here. so all of you reading in cali, oregon, washington etc, send the link around to some friends, you cant let the east coast beat you... can you?

to see the last map you have to click this link here, which will take you to the frappr site, where you can add yourself to the map should you choose to.

and so there ya have it, a bunch of maps to fill this bleak winter scene. i now return you to your normally scheduled football game watching.

new website for men's college ultimate...

Recently announced (within the last few hours i believe) there is a new website online for news about men's college ultimate. Its quite similar to what we are doing here for the high school scene.

the address if you want to check it out - http://collegeulti.com/

my question to you as high school players (or those involved in some way, or interested in any way with high school ultimate) - do you follow college or club ultimate at all? do your team mates? do you think you/they should if you/they dont already? how about club ultimate?

i know when i was in hs, i was starving for information about the college game, all i could find though really was the limited UPA recaps of certain tournaments, and those brave organized TDs who would put up tournament summaries after each day. god im about to sound old (even though only a year has passed) but times sure have changed. you now have CollegeUlti for the men's college scene, ICUltimate for the womens ultimate scene, and PlayUltimate for the high school scene.

sweet.

neato new things on the blog...

hey, hi, hello there loyal readers... so it is january, and save a few local winter leagues ultimate has gone into hibernation in the high school ultimate world, except for those devout players seeking to better their game in the offseason by running, lifting, training, sprinting, and of course reading the PlayUltimate blog.

now seeing as everybody loves when things are simple and easy, we have attempted to make your reading of this site as simple and easy as possible.

thus in the past few days, as im sure some of you have astutely noticed, we have added a few features to the site that will allow you to easily access the content more readily than painstakingly typing in our entire url.

email subscription - at your right you will notice that you can merely enter your email address and you will receive a daily email update in your inbox of the recent posts on the site.

rss feeds - we have had these for a while now, but might as well plug em - at right are a ton of buttons for adding the site to whatever rss feed reader you use (myYahoo, Google, Bloglines whatever) - if you dont use a feed reader, i suggest checking them out, they are pretty cool, usefull little gadgets that make your life alot easier and save you considerable time surfing the web (explanation from wikipedia) (list of feed readers from wikipedia)

latest PlayUltimateBlog - Latest Headlinesheadlines - so you have a blog, or a website of some king (myspace, livejournal, xanga etc) and want to refer people to our site so they can start to understand what exactly ultimate is, or how big the high school scene is, whatever, now you can copy and past a bit of script and have the latest headlines appear on your site. (shown below) the code is on the right hand side if you scroll down...

i know i know we have already done too much, but theres more...

frappr - yeah i didnt know what it meant a few days ago either, but thats beside the point. frappr is a site which through the magic of google maps and a few other neato technologies allows groups of people with similar interests (in our case high school ultimate and this blog) to connect in an interesting way. you can essentially add a little pin point on the map of where you are reading from, if you want you can add a profile photo, description - whatever. i thought it was pretty cool, perhaps you will as well. its fun to see where people are coming from to the site, we have stats by time zone, but that really doesnt tell the whole story.

bookmark on del.icio.us - i dont personally use this site, but apparently alot of people do, so i added a link for people to easily bookmark us on there. for simplicity's sake, you can click here.

there is also a link now on the lower right hand side to easily add us to your blogroll (service by blogrolling.com)

for poops and giggles, you can check out how much the site is currently "worth", which is factored by how many different websites of varying sizes link to us.

which brings me to the last thing recently added to the site, an easy way to link to us, on the right hand side if you scroll down you can see text box with the necessary code to link to the site.

if you want other people to hear about the site, or feel that they might be interested in what we post here, please by all means add a link to us somewhere online. linkage and word of mouth are really the two ways any site can hope to grow, and we are attempting to grow this site into a national news source for high school ultimate, and if that is going to be the case, it only seems right that people from all over the country should have the chance to read the coverage.

so thats just a brief rundown of what we have recently added to the site, you can look for more fun unique little widgets to pop up on the site in the future, and we may let you know about em through a post, or perhaps we will just let them be discovered gradually, either way we thank you for your continued support, and look forward to giving you the latest in high school ultimate news as the seasons begin to gear up.

keep it classy and play ultimate...

Elite Juniors Tourney Announced in Georgia

The Paideia Cup, as it is called has recently been announced on rsd as an "elite juniors tournament".

Ok, interesting enough, its got all the good markings of a great tournament. Solid perennial contender as the hosting team, held in warm climate for April, 8 teams - perhaps the 8 best in the country if managable.

But what sets it apart, why am i bringing it up here? Because it is free.

thats right, you heard it, i wrote it - free.

all that is required is a $200 deposit, a check which according to Hunter A. the poster on rsd - will be "ripped up in front of you when you arrive at the fields"

this my friends, and readers of high school ultimate news, is beautiful. this is where the action is. the team has decided to host a tournament where the only cost for the teams attending is travel to the tournament area.

surely this will enable the most elite high school teams in the country a better chance at attending.

i personally think this is an awesome idea, and kudos to Hunter and Michael Baccarini (Paideia) for pulling it off.

now is where you come in - there are hundreds of high school teams in the country, who are the top eight? who will end up traveling to georgia for what may be a preview of easterns or westerns? amherst? churchill? pensbury? madison?

in the coming weeks the site will be releasing polls ever so often of our contributors as to who they believe are the top teams in the nation. PlayUltimate National Survey... or idk, we'll tack on a catchy name to it which conforms to an even sweeter acronym later. point being - from the definitive source in high school ultimate you will have a recurring poll of the best teams in the nation.

who will take home the Paideia Cup? you tell us.

ps - if you are from the Georgia area, or play for paideia etc, we are currently looking for a contributor(s) from the region, contact the site at playultimateblog @ gmail.com for more information

we definitely want this tournament covered in person, so if you are at all interested, drop us a line.

PlayUltimate Contributor - Tom Herndon

High school team: Didn't have it at my high school. I ran Cross Country and Track.

College team: played some pickup at NCSU, lots of it barefoot with shoes marking front lines of endzones (no backlines).

Current residence: Chapel Hill, North Carolina

Where you first heard of ultimate: Friends in college.

Years playing game: A solid decade gone by. . .

Notable accomplishments while playing: I provide daily evidence of "conservation of greatness." Closest-to-hardcore-event: Broke a wrist, but got the D, stopping the score! Least-hardcore: Stripped myself with my knee while throwing a backhand in Winterleague. And there was much disbelief. . .

Why you have expertise on the region you are reporting on: Over the last six years, I've taken HS teams from NC as far north as Princeton, NJ, as far south as Birmingham,AL (4th place finish open, 7th place Girls) and points between the College Easterns fields in Wilmington, and the PHAT River Campus fields of University School of Nashville, TN.

Any high school or college accomplishments in regards to writing/journalism: I published the "Village Voice Nepal" for a year where 'cut and paste' involved scissors, glue and a candle lit room.

Favorite Tournament Played: Our yearly return to Kudzu, the first large tournament the team attended and returns for every year as a current/alumni squad. I get to see my handiwork comparing my first players to my current players. In six years we have yet to win a game, however last year we had a lead in all but the last game we played. Somehow when another team's average experience nears or exceeds the our players’ average year in school, we have trouble finishing on top. However, we've gotten better every year (especially as our Alumni improve) and sometime soon, some adult team will finally become CHUF's first Kudzu victim. . .

My moment at the podium:
Competive Ultimate is awesome. However, I also want to champion the start or continuation of fun Ultimate as well. I challenge every program to start and/or maintain a freeplay as a year round, regular feature of their program that all comers are encouraged to attend. Where an emphasis on structure and skill development is minimal. Where some of the points are all inverted throws and a T-rex point (elbows pinned to ribs) is pulled and scored after 80 hilarious turnovers.

As our sport expands, much of the emphasis is on developing the competition and not keeping the fun that drew most folks to it in the first place. This is especially important in middle and high school where players who don’t excel immediately in the structured game are likely to turn their back to it and miss out on a lifetime of joy (and safe exercise.) Maintaining the lure that brought folks together in the first place is key to attracting new folks to the sport.

PlayUlitmate Contributors - Luke Johnson

Name: Luke Johnson
Age: 25
Lives In: Eugene, OR
High School Team:
Never had the opportunity to play until I got into college...
College Team: North Park University (started the team my senior year, played in two tournaments and missed out of playing at sectionals because of a church retreat I was running).
Where I First Heard of Ultimate: I was a senior in high school when I was told
the thing we were doing outside with a frisbee at youthgroup was actually a sport. I never really believed the person who told me until I was a freshman in college and began hearing how big the sport really was. I played in my first game as a freshman at NPU against a newly established Wheaton College team who killed us. We weren't even a team yet, and were just getting guys together to play a little pick-up and it took about 2 years until we actually had a team.
Years Playing the Game: I have been playing competitive ultimate since my senior year at NPU in the spring of 2003.
Notable Accomplishments While Playing: Starting the official college team at my university in the summer of 2003 and being a contributing player on Darkstar (Eugene's OPEN Club team) starting in the spring of 2004.
Favorit
e Tournament Played: Indiana Invite (College tournament that went all night in an indoor football arena)
Involvement in Community: I have been the mixed and open coach of the Churchill High School team for the last 3 years as well as the Eugene Coordinator for the start-up teams at Kennedy & Roosevelt Middle School. My passion resides in the development of youth ultimate to give every students the opportunity to play this wonderful game.
Favorite Tournament Coached: Westerns 2005
Mentors or Role Models in the Sport: Living here in Eugene for only a few years has meant I am still getting to know t
he ultimate community here. I think that if I had to pick a mentor or role model in the game it would have to be Jon King, a player who could have been playing before I was born. His onfield intensity, unrelenting spirit and tenacity are things I wish I had more of.
Ultimate Quote: If you can touch it, you can catch it...

Churchill HS (Eugene, OR) in Review...

I have been working around the clock on the new chsultimate.com website that hosts the Churchill High School Ultimate Team from sunny Eugene, Oregon. If you don't know who we are, you should. We were the MIXED team that took the Oregon State Tournament (OHSUC) last spring and our OPEN team took second place at Westerns. Our team this year was supposed to be in a complete rebuidling stage, but our leading players have proven they are far more ready than anyone expected.

Last time I wrote here I was letting you all know about the Sundodger tournament in Burlington, WA. The Sundodger tournmanet was way back in November, but the action there was some of the last Juniors ultimate in the Northwest and proved to be some of the best MIXED action I've seen. In fact, following the tournament, Churchill HS gained the number one position on both the MIXED and OPEN youth divisions on the UPA RRI website. They currently are holding the top spot with an RRI of 3049, just slightly ahead of the Pennsbury OPEN team at 3041.

I promised a write-up the weekend following the tournament, but never quite got it done. The write-up is done and can be viewed
here along with the other tournaments CHS attended this fall. If you would rather see the action, I just finished the Sundodger Highlight Reel and will be completing the full Tournament DVD soon. You can see the video here:

SundodgerHL (ipod video - mp4 - 37MB)
SundodgerHL (regular mpg - 75MB)

For some sweet Middle School action (as some have commented already on), you can see the Highlight Reel from our TurkeyBowl2 tournament held the weekend after on Nov 19:

Turkeybowl2HL
(ipod video - mp4 - 20MB)
Turkeybowl2HL (regular mpg - 41MB)

If the links don't work, navigate on over to the chsultimate.com website and find it in our media section.

very exciting news...

has the PlayUltimate consortium revived the dinosaurs? discovered the truth of nature vs. nurture? forcibly taken over the UPA?

only time will tell, make sure to check back frequently these next few days for some very very big announcements from your favorite high school ultimate news source.....

we promise this is big.
