Top Western HS Open Team of 2008

Again, same things for the Westerns Division (read below on the Eastern Poll for criteria of teams being listed). Here it is much simpler as these are only the teams from the 2007 Western Tournament.

what is the reasons people are putting Northwest and Hopkins way up there

Anonymous said...

I dont think that Northwest will be as strong this year. The loss of more then 10 seniors, including the top 10 players on the team, will make this a rebuilding year for them. It is a similar situation for the top four finishers last year, Northwest, South Eugene, Nathan Hale, and Churchill. I also think that Hopkins is a bit over -rated from there 2nd place finish two years ago. Lakeside and Seattle Academy will be the top 2 this year.

Anonymous said...

just a fact: nathan hale lost 16 seniors from their 2007 squad.

Anonymous said...

Hopkins beat lakeside last year when they had kids with food poisoning and Hopkins has the same core returning to the team I wouldnt be suprised to see them go far. I know Northwest lost one of the greatest senior classes and a team that will go into the books as one of the greats but they have a middle school feeder program and i am sure that they will do well. SAS does have the same team last year and Jimi Hooper has improved and looked good at YCC. I dont know I am expecting the Hopkins kids to come out strong they have kids who have played with eachother for a long time and have great athleticism. It will be fun to see what happens this year, and maybe Junction city will be the great supriser this year??????????

Anonymous said...

I have seen hopkins play many times and they have themselves a good core group. With Arenson and Brickwedde at their primes and many others to support, i think they have a good chance at nationals. They are set for the next few years with players like asa gotlieb and simon gottlieb to shut down the back of the field, and Robbie Shapiro and Matt Grewe to get it to them. Overall, i think hopkins will pull through this year ahead of the rest.

Anonymous said...

any team with cooper schumacher simply cannot lose a game. it isnt possible. nws is gonna fourpeat, sorry lakeside and saas. cooper schumacher is just too damn good.

Anonymous said...

Why does everyone think hopkins is so good? they are decent but their offense is really easy to shut down and they dont have any standout players. Last year they lost to Lakeside, Saas, Churchill, and a couple other teams i think.

On that note, who are some of the more standout players on some of these top teams? Who will be leading the Washington teams this year?

Anonymous said...

on SAAS its obviousley Jimi Hooper and Raider. On Lakeside its Juilian 'squishmitten" walker and Justin Norden. On Hopkins its Greg Arenson Brickwedde and i guess the Gotlieb kids. I wonder what will happen?

DFREE said...

Jacob Janin.

Anonymous said...

Rehder doesn't go to SAAS. He hasn't since his freshman year. However, SAAS does have Michael Revelas, who is a baller.
South will be strong this year, so will SAAS and Lakeside. Hopkins has the potential to be good, but we'll have to see.

Sam Keller
Lakeside #22

Anonymous said...

i dont get how you can count out hopkins so much? they beat lakeside without a bunch of their players or something. and they still have their core group back from last year from what i have heard.

Anonymous said...

saas tooled hopkins.

Anonymous said...

well, SAAS did kinda roll hopkins at westerns, and Lakeside beat them on saturday pool play when both teams had all their players. albeit, it was on universe point, so lakeside and hopkins will be pretty even.

Anonymous said...

semis:

Saas vs Hopkins

Lakeside vs South Eugene

Finals

Saas over Lakeside
no idea who will win

Anonymous said...

Lakeside didn't have a great tournament. We weren't playing well and we didn't have the right mindset. However, we did beat them when they had all of their good players, and they beat us when a lot of them were sick. We just didn't step it up enough. However, if I've heard right, Hopkins lost a fair amount more players than Lakeside. I'm not saying they won't be anything- they definitely have the potential to be good. I'm just saying we'll have to wait and see (the tourney is in may, after all...)

Also, Lakeside hasn't lost to SAAS since 2005. They will be sick this year though, and I'm pumped to play them.

Sam Keller
Lakeside #22

Anonymous said...

Lakeside will definately be sick this year. They had a rough schedule last year and went 2-1, but got a hard match-up against Rockhurst in the pre-quarters. Plus they lost one player from last years team. From playing both teams, Lakeside was probably better then Rockhurst, but i didnt get to see the game so im not really sure what happened. I dont know about South next year though, they lost a bunch of huge players. Jacob is amazing, but i dont think he will be enough to get them past quarters or semis at the best. I think people are voting for Northwest just because they are obviously well known as the best in the west for a while, and some people dont realize that this will be a huge rebuilding year for them.

SAAS vs Lakeside is gonna be intense this year.

Simon Montague
SAAS #9

Anonymous said...

Hopkins did lose a couple of the players but wasnt there sophomores who beat lakeside second day.....they have super stars and chemistry they will be good. SAAS did waste opkins thoguh last year when two captains had to leave for disclocated body parts but no excuses. Lakeside probably has the best returning team. All that matter is how the west will be won

Anonymous said...

Ok my last comment of the night:
I meant no offense to Hopkins players. You guys are ballers; I met a few of you at YCC. I've loved playing you guys, and I'm pumped to play again at westerns 08.

love,
sam

Anonymous said...

hopkins will be decent. they lose some players. lakeside is going to be good. they will win westerns. saas doesn't have the experience, hale loses too many, churchill loses their roster, and south...well they played great this year. don't write off northwest either. they may not win it this year, but they still have some very good players that will be talked about once they get a chance to play.

Anonymous said...

saas has more experience than lakeside. if anyone makes the young underachieving mistakes it will be the youngish lakeside team. northwest has a program same with hopkins. the whole scene will take a hit but what can you do. and sam whats up with this signing your posts. everybody knows playultimate is for anonymous trashtalk.

Anonymous said...

South graduated five guys last year. Ivan, Sam, Jimmy, Miles, and myself. One of Churchill's best young players, Dylan Freechild transfered to South and will be a sophomore this year. We had two eighth graders playing with us at westerns last year, one of which was a starting O-line handler. They will have matured out of their awkward pubescent bodies. I have been playing with Jacob Janin all summer on Rhino and he has grown by huge leaps and bounds, and I would argue that he's the best player in high school ultimate. Watch out for south. Finals prediction: South 15 - Northwest 12

South could be good but i dunno about northwest. Plus id say the loss of those huge players on south will make them not as good this year. SAAS and Lakeside will be the same teams but with more maturity and better teamwork after each team only loses one player. Prediction: SAAS, Lakeside, South, and Hopkins semis. SAAS Lakeside final

Anonymous said...

Hopkins has to many super stars to handle. Everyone on their team can play. If any team matches up with Hopkins this year it will be SAAS or lakeside, but how to you shut down four world hopefuls on one team?

DFREE said...

hopkins is a very athletic team and they can only get better but i dont think they will be that much better than anyone else. i would though be surprised if they didnt make the semis. nws is always good. but again with the loss off that many players and leadership it wont be a surprise if they make the semis but it wont be a surprise if they dont. lakeside is good but i just dont think they have the all around game. saas will be huge this year and could take it.

saas
nws
sehs
hopkins in the semis

i think hopkins is the weakest of that group but anyone of them could beat the other it just depends on the format and the seeding.
no argument jacob janin is one of the best high school players out there.

dylan freechild
south eugene

Anonymous said...

South will be good next year. People underestimate them. And Jacob is insane. And I disagree that Lakeside will be as good as people are letting on. They aren't really athletic and don't really impress me as much as SAAS or South. And did Cretin-Derham graduate players, because they were pretty good at Westerns. Better than Hopkins, Lakeside and SAAS at least.

Anonymous said...

Saas will be pretty good this year. Lakeside will also be good. South has Jacob Janin who is in my opinion by far the best highschool player on the west coast for sure. It will be a close battle between these three teams.

Jimmy Hooper
Saas #2

Anonymous said...

matt rehder will absolutely tool jacob janin or jimmy hooper or anybody in the air any day of the weak. Jimmy has better throws than jacob but jacob is a dominant cutter. it will be close

Anonymous said...

matt rehder probably won't be at westerns...he goes to roosevelt

Anonymous said...

Two 8th graders on your UPA roster for westerns that requires all players to be from your school? How did this take place? Anyone else catch this?

Anonymous said...

oh no! they're picking up ringer 8th graders! what a scandal!

seriously. plus lots of schools are middle school and high school. thats how northwest is. we played with an 8th grader in colorado.

Anonymous said...

You guys are all retarded.........JUnction City is going to roll over everyone at Westerns they are just unbeleivable screw hopkins, south, lakeside, and SAAS Junction City is the best.

The Kings of Ultimate

DFREE said...

its a big leap going from talking about who will win westerns to whos better than who. you cant decide that in the fall westerns is still so far away. rehder janin and hooper will be three dominant players though.

could we have a discussion on who are the top candidates for worlds next year

Anonymous said...

from everything i've heard, rehder isn't gonna be at westerns. if that's true, that levels the playing field a lot.

Anonymous said...

Jacob Janin for sure..........Hooper.........and who is still elgible from last years worlds?

Anonymous said...

In Seattle, some of the top players from each school are:
SAAS- Jimmy Hooper, Michael Revelas, Simon Montague
Lakeside: Julian Childs-Walker, Sam Keller, Justin Nordon
Hale: Jake Coate
Northwest: Austin (dont know his last name)
Roosevelt: Matt Rehder

Then in Oregon theres Jacob Janin
I dont know about anywhere else

teams should seriously start planning now for a trip to paideia cup in atlanta. it's usually sometime in april. that's probably the only and best chance for cross-country competition, unless east coast teams decide to make the trip to seattle's spring reign.

The Pulse said...

Which they won't, because Spring Reign is mixed.

Also, 16-13 is an impossible score.

Anonymous said...

Nothing is impossible!

Anonymous said...

Hey Hopkins Highschool in Minnesota is trying to plan a tournament to finish the discussion who is better east or west.....a 16 team invite 8 from the east and 8 from the west so clear your calenders and look forward to ending the discussion on which coast is the better one

what's the ideal time of year in minnesota?

wHaTuP! said...

16-13 is easily possible in a tournament with a final game to 17 that had a cap thrown on...

The Pulse said...

But Westerns is played to 15.

Anonymous said...

That east/west tournament should have been last year. The west last year was the best it has ever seen. This year, not so much. Maybe next year though. There will be better players then.

Anonymous said...

May 3 is the date that the tournamnet would probably be held

Anonymous said...

Does South have the depth to win westerns? i know Jacob Janin is one of if not the best youth player right now, but it's hard to win a turny with one guy.
-kc

Anonymous said...

Well they got to the finals last year with only two guys against much stiffer competition.

Anonymous said...

South will lose to SAAS and Lakeside no question. Jacob Janin cant beat a whole team. No way.

Anonymous said...

I bet Jacob could beat the whole lakeside team. But anyways, they have a lot of other talent backing him up. They have some young guys that tear it up. Dylan and Aaron are straight up ballers. Watch out for them. They have some really athletic guys they picked up last year that are going to be a lot better too.

Semis- SAAS v Hopkins
South v Lakeside

Final- SAAS v South

I don't know who would win the final. SAAS is a pretty deep squad, but South has a lot of talent.

Anonymous said...

saas kinda just has jimmy hooper and michael revelas...and simon

Anonymous said...

If saas comes focused, they will win westerns. that probably wont happen, but they still have a good shot at it. Jacob Janin will not shutdown a team.... especially one with Jimmy HOoper or Julian Childs Walker

Anonymous said...

true.
a focused saas team is a really good team.

Anonymous said...

SAAS has alot more the Jimmy, Michael, and Simon. Julian can go deep consistantly, Stevie gets open dump every time, and is a good back up handler for Jimmy. Besides that, the rest of the 2009 kids are all strong players who can tear it up. While Jacob Janin is insane, im pretty sure he can get shut down, or at least contained by the rest of the team. Also, i think that the loss of Johnny, Ivan, Sam, Miles, and Jimmy will do alot more damage then people think it will.

Anonymous said...

does anyone know when turkey bowl (in eugene) is this year? Or who to contact?

thanks

Anonymous said...

SAAS will win westerns no question

Anonymous said...

we will just have to wait and see

Anonymous said...

if julian c-w cuts his hair he will be unstoppable

Anonymous said...

i covered squishmitten at westerns last year and wasnt as impressed as you guys seem to be. unless he grew a lot thru ycc and stuff since then, i wouldn't worry too much. i know that hooper and some of the hopkins handlers are as good or better...

Anonymous said...

i guarded julian at westerns last year and at ycc this year. he improved so much from westerns to ycc. he is one of if not the best juniors in the country this year.

Anonymous said...

I played against Julian at ycc's too and hes pretty damn good and definitely up there with Hooper, but I wouldn't say hes better than Janin. Hopkins has some good handlers but they also have Brickwedde and Simon Gotlieb cutting not to mention Greg Arenson can do both really well.

Anonymous said...

Jake Sachs would have been the greatest ultimate player in the nation if he didnt lose his knees to fumoral Lubeella syndrome..........what a horrible thing

Anonymous said...

How could you possibly say that Julian is better than Jacob. Wow, where have you been. Julian is good and a cool dude, but Jacob is way better.

Anonymous said...

that Jake Sachs kid was like a god on the feild. This kids was only 5'11" but had maybe a 50 inch vertical. Furious was beggin this 15 yeAR OLD to promise to come to their team. but this simon gotlieb was jealous and hit him in the knee and the rest was history, Jake sachs was going to be the savior of ultimate and bring it to the next level

Anonymous said...

best players on west coast:

1. Jacob Janin
2. Jimi Hooper or Matt raider
3. Julian C-W

i dont know about east coast, but these are the top four on the west. anyone disagree?

Anonymous said...

I don't think anyones said that Julian is better than Jacob, but that doesn't take anything away from Julian hes a great player

Anonymous said...

Who are the best players in each region?????????? and are they all trying out for worlds?

Julian is a baller and has improved greatly from Westerns. He can run for days and is really solid all around. He will be a very strong contender for worlds.

Anonymous said...

anybody have any idea where westerns is gonna be?

Anonymous said...

Westerns will probably be somewhere in Oregon is my guess. Who do people think will be the top ten players at westerns this year?

Anonymous said...

1. Jacob Janin
2. Jimmy Hooper
3. Julian Childs Walker

the last 7 are up for grabs...

Anonymous said...

greg arenson, sam brickwedde,Gotliebs,Simon Montague, i hear about this Dylan FreeChild, Cooper Schumacher, dont even know who he is but people talk about him

Anonymous said...

westerns is still wide open for any team to take. with nws churchill and hale losing so many people, it gives janin&freechild(south) hooper(saas) squish(lakeside) and arenson&brickwedde(hopkins) the chances to really prove themselves and try to come out on top.

Anonymous said...

SAAS has much more than hooper. They wil take westerns if they don't beat themselves. They havent beaten lakeside in a while, but this year that will change. Simon Montague, Michael Revelas, and Julian snider will tear it up and toss people.

There are some good players from Churchill still. Although I do not believe they will be a threat for the title this year. Churchill has probably the best sophomore in the west right now, Ian Campbell. He wasn't able to be at Westerns, but he would have played a lot as a freshmen. Watch out.

remi schneider from lakeside is a huge sophomore baller.
also i hear dylan freechild from south? is he a sophomore? i hear he's good.
casey bateman from hale, although hale's team took a hit from losing so many seniors.

who does nws have back this year? does anybody think that they have a shot at a fourpeat?

Anonymous said...

maybe. They have several underclassmen who are solid and could form a very strong team. SAAS and Lakeside should be able to beat them pretty handly. We'll see.

Anonymous said...

gabe fruchter- by far beset sophmore in the country. he used to go to hopkins and he would have been the best player on hopkins right now as a sophmore. hes 6'2 and can almost dunk. he now lives in seattle.

Anonymous said...

i second that for sure

Anonymous said...

id say itd be pretty tough to label someone the best sophomore in the country.

there are some mediocre teams out there right now in rebuilding years that have some pretty solid players, just without the numbers in senior or junior players to make runs at easterns or westerns.

always gotta look at the younger brothers of current studs too, almost always solid.

Anonymous said...

gabe's 2 older brothers play for oregon. One quit but the other is a starter. he is for sure best sophmore in the country 100% stand by it.

Anonymous said...

you guys need to stop saying baller for a good frisbee player, it makes no sense and it sounds stupid. also lakeside wont win a championship, they have athletes and skill players to do it but they have horrible chemistry and always end up bickering

Anonymous said...

Lakeside has beaten SAAS consistently over the past two years. SAAS has the potential to win westerns, but they have to beat lakeside first... Don't be quick to count out lakeside for a Western Championship. South will not win. HOpkins will not win. Its either SAAS or Lakeside taken the title thisyear.

Anonymous said...

I cant agree, yes lakeside actually probably has the most talent this year. They have never lost to SAAS, and they are athletic, but they dont work well together at all, i watched them a ton this year and they are always on each other, they have several guys that just rip them apart. Talent and athletism can take you places, but its a team that will win you a championship

Anonymous said...

Its true, when they played at cold fusion didnt they have a couple of guys walk off the field during the game? It doesnt matter how good they think they are thats just bad spirit

Anonymous said...

athletic sophomores mature.

Anonymous said...

someone walked off the field in a game?

Anonymous said...

it is true that lakeside has a few very talented players that definatley bring them down in big games but i think they have a shot at winning it. Sam Keller and Julian CW are leaders and will be the players that hold their team together. They are definatley a cotenteder this year for the championship.

Anonymous said...

how does that make sense how can they have very talented players that bring them down in big games, arent they supposed to do the opposite?

Anonymous said...

Julian and Sam will lead them this year. The talented players that may bring them down sometimes could also blow up and make a huge and positive impact.... If you have such a low view of lakesides talent, how do you explain them beating saas consistently and also beating hopkins?

Anonymous said...

they also lost to Hopkins sophomores by 3 and only beat Hopkins day one on Universe point. They didnt beat SAAS and national. It all matters how each team will match up with eachother.

Anonymous said...

All I know is that they have trouble with chemistry, they are talented and very athletic from what i remember but are they deep enough? THey have Julian CW he played at YCC isnt that it?

Anonymous said...

no, they have alot more than that. Sam keller, chris piggot, justin norden (yes, jeremys younger brother). These four are lakesides core.

Anonymous said...

no lie, that's a solid core... but what happens when they all get ass tired from playing every point? are they gonna have the depth and stamina to keep up with south saas hopkins nws or churchill for that matter?

Anonymous said...

they will beat churchil. It has been a pattern with lakeside to fall apart at westerns. I dont know how they will do against hopkins, saas, or south. Hopkins should be beaten by Lakeside, but nws might take lakeside down.

Anonymous said...

Son Hale will toss lakeside and saas like we always do, but sadly our downfall will come at the hands of amie "the tree" kawai and the rest of the velt players.

what about churchill? Yes they lost a bunch of seniors, but they have a really good junior class and a few very talented sophomores.

Anonymous said...

churchill played like all seniors, cept for maybe 1? they wont win, didnt they also lose luke? this is kinda a building year for them. And NW will not win, they are tiny kids this year that have hella skills but that cant carry them. It will really be Lakeside, Hopkins and SAAS this year. Its interesting those three, cuz Lakeside has yet to lose to SAAS and Hopkins beat Lakeside when they had their sophomores, so it shall be an interesting trio to see, it really comes down to the studs on teh teams making plays in clutch situations

Anonymous said...

CHS is screwed. They may throw some upsets but chances are they wont get far. They lost Luke, a huge amount of star Seniors and im pretty sure Dylan Freechild ditched them to play with south.
CHS in my mind might grasp 7th. If Ian Campbell, Louis Henry and Andrew Henry pull the squad together. Otherwise, CHS will be an easy win, even for a team like Tribe.

Ahem,
