Top Eastern HS Open Team for 2008

Taking from at least one comment, the discussion would like to be started. So, here is maybe a nice way of beginning that discussion... Voting more than once, though possible, skews the results, so just vote once. And, you may wonder why some teams are not on here and others are. I simply took the standings from this last year's Easterns and then added the only other teams listed on Score Reporter with an RRI in the top 20 on the east coast (I didn't include any teams with less than 10 games)

why the asterixs?

Because they weren't at Easterns in '07.

Ryan, what to you know about the big contenders? CHS, ARHS, Pennsbury, Paideia...

North Hills has lost absolutely no-one and will be a force.

Columbia lost two handlers and two defenders but Zander will NOT lose this year. Lots of people are stepping up already.

Amherst is in a star-less flux but undoubtedly will still be strong in spite of that. And they have a great zone defense.

Paideia lost a lot of stars but they still have plenty of good players - the Terry brothers, Kale, etc. They're still top-four in the east with Baccarini at the helm.

Pennsbury is, I think, the team on the outside looking in - and that's if they can keep Beaches. They're still athletic and have good throwers, but it's a team that has to replace too many players to make it to the finals again. But if Paideia doesn't go to Easterns, they may take that last semifinal spot.

No east coast girls poll?

This poll only shows how many people from each team visit this site. Honest and unbiased people will vote for Paideia.

Agreed....I played for andover (not phillips academy) and I can honostly say that Paideia was the best team in the east.

The Pulse said...

Well, yes, they were the best in 2007. By far. But the question is about 2008.

Anonymous said...

Well I'm embarrassed. Missed the date. That's a much more reasonable question

North Hills is going to be good. They graduated no one, and they got to the fials of the Paideia Cup last year. I think it's North Hills "coast" to lose. Columbia may be solid, but they gotta play in the clutch. The lost a few games at the AI that they should've won. Paideia lost a bunch, but it's Paideia, they always have a solid team. Same with Amherst. Should be a much more exciting year than last year when it was pretty much one sided.

This is North Hills' year. No questions asked. They lost nobody. Nobody.

just b/c a team loses no one doesnt mean they will be good...and paideia is going to eat monkey dung this year. they're gonna suck. a lot. hands down. they don't deserve any respect-their "team" graduated last year...

Columbia came in 3rd at Easterns while North Hills came in 5th. North Hills lost 15-11 to Pennsbury while Columbia took them to universe. Paideia has a lot of really good kids who were less well known last year because of their stars. North Hills will be good, but it's going a bit too far to say it's their coast to lose. Especially without seeing any tournament results.

chs and north hills are the two best in the east. I've played both teams numerous times and always had great games. I think that chs has a better core of studs, but north hills is solid all the way down the line. Everyone who has seen chs knows that zander is as good as it gets for juniors ultimate. Josh, Brian, and Declan are some more players who can certainly give anyone on north hills all they can handle on the field. North hills is a strong team this year though and will come out really pumped whenever these teams do meet. Pennsbury is still going to be a strong team; Isaac is going to hold it down with his handling (he’s a Saul, there born with disc in hand); Jay Principi is a returning d line starter who over the past few months has worked really hard to make his game more complete; Dennison beaches, who really doesn’t stop sprinting or miss big plays, and also Elijah Karoly a lanky 6’3 handler who has really developed into his own over the summer. Overall this year should be interesting to watch with a lot of good teams coming out of the east.

Thing poll is really stupid guys.People can vote more than once. And even though they're not supposed to, people are. This poll in no way shows the real rankings....It just shows how many times people from the teams are voting....

word around town is that Ray Kinsella is stepping up as well, and going to make a run with star deep threat Terrence Mann. Sometimes confused with the easter bunny. but then again, how do i know, YOU SAID IT

although it hurts to say it, north hills will be the best team, its sad when a team hated by everyone they have ever played becomes the best

I just want to know why everyone has to hate North Hills? I'm pretty sure that we haven't played half the people that talk us down and that is just ridiculous. We get in heated games that some times have some confrontation in them but we get over it. Also we have awesome relationships with all the pittsburgh teams and pennsbury. So stop hatin'. And Anon 4:16 you live 3000 miles, judge if we ever play you.

We all know this poll, before even any fall games have taken place, means nothing... the first & final voice on this matter will be who shows up big this spring.

I heard 2008 is the year of the cactus...

Columbia only lost one game at the AI.

I happen to enjoy some of the North Hills kids company

Anonymous said...

what was the score of North Hills vs Columbia at paidea?

Anonymous said...

like 15-3 or something

Anonymous said...

but that game played in almost freezing temperatures, with insane winds and rain. almost every game at that tournament cant be counted against anyone

I played against North Hills for 5 consecutive years. I can say from experience that each year, the skill of their team increases exponentially. Everyone mentions that they graduated 0 players, but many forget to look at YCC's. Last year, Pittsburgh's YCC team took around 9 North Hills players (approximately). With at least 9 players who have played club, and 0 graduating players, I won't be shocked if they end the season undefeated.

-I can't wait to see the results of the first NH-Paideia game

Using weather as an excuse for a loss is dumb. Until all ultimate is played indoors, weather is part of the playing field. Teams from the North East have the choice of practicing through bad weather, or not practicing. You need to learn how to play well in bad weather. I believe it is Oregan that is undefeated at nationals whenever it rains. They have to practice in bad weather, so they get good at playing in bad weather. You cant hold it against them that the other teams cant compete in a little bit of rain.

yea wissahickon is the team to beat this year...calling it, o and beeches is gone from pennsbury so they gonna lose to wiss tomorrow!

Paideia will hands down be the best team. I also think a lot of people are giving Amherst more shit than they deserve. They graduated some of their best players last year and still managed to make it to the finals this year. Pennsbury was a one year flare, and everyone they had graduated. They will be seen at nationals, but will not fare nearly as well this year.

As a Brutal Grassburn (USN) alum, I can tell you that this year will either be a good year for them, or a rebuilding year. They graduated some crucial seniors last year, including an amazing deep man.

Overall, I think we'll see some great competition in the Eastern High School Ultimate circuit this year.

Beaches is not gone...

"Pennsbury was a one year flare, and everyone they had graduated"

3 out of 4 state championships? 3rd place to 1st? 1 year flare? Pennsbury has always been on the map, and they will be again this year, I promise.

there should be a tourni that takes the all star teams from the east and the west.... this will really settle it.
West Coast would most likely win because of the overwhelming skill on their starting 7.

WEST 15 EAST 12

well lets think about it

West
Jacob Janin
Jimmy Hooper
Julian C-W
Sam Brickwedde
The Gotliebs

East
Terry's
Kale
Ben Funk
Alex Thorne

who else

and west would kill

padget from columbia is sick as hell and would definitely be hard for the west to deal with. but lets not forget how matt rehder destroyed everyone at ycc either.
