weekend open thread... but no tournaments?

Welp, i guess this really is the first truly truly open thread of the year. No high school tournaments this weekend, hope everyone is doing well with graduating and finals and SATs and ACTs and the like.

Use this thread to talk about whatever you might like, suggestions...

remember if you would like to be a contributor for the site you only have 15 more days to apply (i know i originally said the 28th of june would be the deadline but that was dumb of me because i will be in rome for a study abroad program and i would love to have some new contributors fill in the space before then) so new due date is June 23rd.

In the end, who does everyone think the best HS open team was?

Anonymous said...

please, not this again.

paideia or northwest? just go back and read the hundreds of posts about it.

Anonymous said...

Seriously, no need for this again. Paideia was the best on the East, and Northwest was the best in the West. Based on the UPA RRI it was Paideia...but who really knows? I guess we could start an arguement why the formula doesn't work, but wait, that would be college football!!

Does anyone have any tips on defensive drills or where I could find them?

Lets start talking about YCC. Mixed is going to be the main event this year because Philly and Atlanta didn't get open bids, so who do you think's going to win it all. Any thoughts ...

The Pulse said...

Mixed is never the main event. I'd be saying this even if I weren't competing in the open division.

Anonymous said...

yea, I'm kinda tired of hearing that mixed is now the main event from teams bitter about not making the open division.... open will still be just as good without Philly and Atlanta.

"The Pulse" is sexist. The mixed division is the main event this year, regardless of whether you misogynics can accept it.

Males and females compete together as the main event in doubles figure skating, horse racing, as well as the tennis match between Billy Jean King and Bobby Riggs.

And really, teams aren't bitter, it's just that Mixed is the more talented division this year.

Anonymous said...

god damn, why would you randomly play the sexism card? this really has nothing to do with the whole battle of the sexes tennis match, thats ridiculous...it's VERY clear that open ultimate is played at a higher level than mixed...while it's true that women can play and play well, there are physical limitations that are simply fact, you can't call someone racist for saying that they exist (they do. period.)

also, why is the mixed division "more talented" this year just because a couple teams have mixed bids and not open? last i checked, the team that supposedly has the most talent, seattle, is playing open, as are other talented cities.

and if you're gonna get all pseudo progressive and knock people for being sexist when they *aren't* (TOTALLY aren't) how about you don't spell "misogynists" so poorly...nice job there, way to make someone else look stupid instead of yourself

Seattle is going to field a good mixed team. They had far more guys try out then there were spots. I think that, coupled with the fact that Philly and Atlanta are only playing mixed, will make it the most exciting division this year. Maybe not the best, but definitely the most exciting.

The Pulse said...

I don't think that ridiculous blowouts will be very exciting. Or guys getting poach D's deep on hucks thrown to girls. Atlanta can draw from Paideia's women's team - they lost to Amherst 15-13. Every other high-level women's team is sending people in the women's division first - Oregon, Seattle, and New England will have the best women's teams, meaning that only Atlanta and Philly have their best men and women playing at together. And I don't think anyone will dispute that Paideia men + Paideia women can roast any other mixed team that attends.

So no, I don't think it will be the most exciting either. And sexist? Absolutely not. I just really dislike playing and watching coed ultimate - give me an open or women's game any day.

Anonymous said...

son girls is gonna be the main event. Seattle and Oregon duking it out.

Anonymous said...

OMG you are so sexist how can you say that girls are going to be more exciting than guys that is so sexist why don't you go take your sexist anti-men ways and throw them out the window. mixed is going to be SOOOO much better. nobody plays better than bitter people who are just sad that they're city's don't have enough ballers to get it together and get a single gender bid. in like ten years this blog is still gonna be talking about how awesome the Atlanta + Philly rematch in coed YCC was. i mean come on it has too be. the games that paideia and pennsbury played against each other were SOOO close its a complete tossup. like O-M-G.

hey. Whoever "The Pulse" is...start watching what you say. What you are saying is extrememly disrespectful and degrading. It's find that you have an opinion, but dont disrespect others. We're all ultimate players here, so lets act like it.

gapoole said...

Anonymous 2:40, what do you find degrading about the comments from "The Pulse" ? If you've played mixed Ultimate, you understand that poach D's happen fairly frequently. The average height and speed of male Ultimate players is higher than the average height speed of female Ultimate players. Therefore, some mixed teams look to make switches so their tall, athletic male defenders can guard the deep space. Or, sometimes a dude is just quick and gets to a floaty huck to a woman and is able to D her.

The rest of his post is just logic. A city with both mixed, open, and women's bids is spreading its talent pool thinner, and it is not unreasonable to think that the coaches and competitors will make open/women's the priority over mixed.

All he's saying is he doesn't want to watch two teams dominate a tournament. It might be more exciting to watch closer games on the open and womens side.

Anonymous said...

yeah, anon 2:40 i think I'm gonna hafta be a little disrespectful now...you are an idiot.

the pulse legitimately said Nothing that could be construed as sexist or crossing the line, for some reason you are just choosing to interpret it really stupidly like a complete dumbass

you must be the same stupid person that posted anon 10:07...nice life

When was a Paideia Pennsbury game ever close?? Atlanta will dominate YCC mixed if all the stars and great players from gruel and groove play together

Anonymous said...

Yah the most Pennsbury ever scored on gruel was 7.....Atlanta mixed will be much better

Fantusta said...

Don't assume this is just Pennsbury vs. Paideia again. I haven't heard much about the rest of Atlanta (probably because there isn't much), but Philly is also getting Eddie Peters and Aman Nalavade back from last year (they're young enough), and with a year playing at Pitt and Penn under their belts, it should help a lot.

Any talk about how "mixed is going to be the main event" seems to me to be an attempt to downplay the open and girls divisions, and is basically just giving 1 or 2 teams a bit too much credit, if you ask me. I don't think either of those teams (or more appropriately, their loony supporters on here) have the right to claim that whatever division they are playing in is automatically THE BEST. Let's think about it this way: last year, the open and girls divisions were CLEARLY the epitomes of HS ultimate, not the mixed div. And the only thing that has changed this year is that 2 teams are switching over to the weaker division, due to whatever circumstances. No teams "rose to the challenge" and hyped their mixed team, that i know of, so it would appear as though the action did not follow them into the mixed. Open and girls will be THE divisions forever, guaranteed.

Anonymous said...

i agree, sort of. I think it's unfair to hyp one division b/c all of the divisions are unique. Obviously, it's unfair to compare team from the open v. mixed v. girls. I also agree with Anon 2:52 by saying just because Philly and Atlanta joining the mixed division that WILL be the division, not entirely true. It may be a mompetitive division, but not nessarily THE division. On the other hand, however, I feel by sayin the open and girls division will be THE divsions forever is a bit out of line. Yes they are the most mainstream divisions, and maybe the most competitive as of now, buts it is an enterely differenet game of ultimate.

Everyone can shutup now. ATLANTA GIRLS ARE GOOD, COED ULTIMATE CAN BE FUN, ALL OF THE CLUB ULTIMATE IS GOING TO BE COMPETITIVE THIS IS THE BEST HIGH SCHOOL PLAYERS IN THE COUNTRY. this should NOT be a negative forum, everyone who is going to YCC is playing at an elite level of youth ultimate; open, mixed or womens, I am playing for Philly mixed, I cant wait to see Atlanta or any other sick teams, and I hope the open and women's final are universe point games with sick bids all over the place. Lets just play ultimate, jesus.

on a completely seperate note (although it looks like anon 6/11/2007 2:24 AM might have been sarcastic and didn't actually think the penn/paideia games were close) there is a Northwest School Highlight Video that was put together for the end of season party. Northwest has been largely silent from this blog and this is simply a little peak at one of the best teams in the nation that some people might not have gotten the chance to see. this is not all the best plays, its simply what was filmed. the first half is footage from dirty deeds and plu bbq mostly against UW and U Victoria with some other stuff here and there. then there is states and westerns footage complete with a classic casey ikeda pump up speech.
