watchungs reel is a bunch of standard stuff, no big plays at all. most of them dont even make a highlight reel for the better teams
editing-wise, watchung puts out a good highlight reel though, even if they don't have a million layouts like needham

Needham has a lot of nice highlights, but it's mostly layouts and blocks on the mark. Watchung has some really pretty skies, some great hucks, plus the layouts and blocks. I personally feel that the footage itself and the editing are superior in the Watchung videos.
I really like the Churchill Freshman video (my second favorite), although the fakes get maybe too much attention throughout. Definitely a nice reel for a freshmen team, speaks to the quality of the program.
And me? I had nothing to do with this. I voted once. I didn't make the reels, and only attended one of those tournaments, as a spectator. Who are you anyway, Anonymous 7:05pm? How doo you know me, but not know how to spell my name?

Watchung Hills in my opinion definitely had the best editing job. The plays timed with the music were done nicely and the beginning where someone is getting "the best" of them was a nice touch. Sure, they had some filler clips but so did everyone except for maybe Needham whose editing job was...lackluster at best. Not to mention, their song choice was significantly better than most of the entries. Churchill also had a very nice highlight reel...I'm surprised they havn't gotten more votes

Glenn, Needham's reel may have a lot of layouts, but it has just as many (no, more) big skies as Watchung's, plus MUCH better big hucks. if you watch needham's full 2006 video, you'l see a lot more big hucks, but they apparently didnt want to fill it with long clips that would take up too much time. also there are a lot of big layouts and sweet blocks, something watchung's video cant say. plus, like i said, there are more and better skies in needham's, too

If you want to talk about filler clips, the Needham highlight reel recycles clips from their game against Watchung in spring of '06. Watchung's highlights were all from two tournaments per highlight reel, all from this season. I was under the impression that the highlight competition was for this season, not 2006, and in any case Needham didn't submit their "full" reel, so I don't see why I should expected to vote based on it.
I'm not saying Needham's highlights are poor--far from it, they are pretty swee--and they are an excellent team, I played with some of them at JEM camp and at the SJA Invite last year). But I still would vote for the Watchung highlight reel, based on the reasons I've already cited.
watchungs skies aren't even that good. andrew lunetta of needham absoluetly tools on kids all over the needham reel (skies, foot blocks, insane lays), handlers tom bassett and john barker throw massive hucks all over the place, and this random kid brantley lays out all over the place. what more do you want?

needham obiviously has at lot of great plays on their videos.
Watchung Hills, while doing some ok editing with their music and such, doesn't have the same about of great plays that really make a reel interesting, and its clear that a lot of their players must follow playultimate.
I also think that some team with good editing are both the churchill videos, and the ICS video. All of these a really fun to watch and while they dont have the amount of plays that needham does, i think they have the best editing and keep whoever is watching them well entertained.
and the ICS one is pretty hilarious. what does ICS stand for?

hey, i made the needham video, and the guidelines for the video did not say the clips were exclusively to be from this season. I thought that the goal was to make the best highlight video, but I guess I was wrong?

okay, admittedly, Watchung Hills does not make the plays. Skies, Layouts, and kick blocks may be a bit scarce.
Lets put it this way.
Needham's Highlights > Watchung's Highlights.
But in honest opinion, I believe that
Watchung's Editing > Needham's.
It's really hard to make a choice here, but from an editor's prospective, I'd have to go with Watchung.
Needham's highlight reel is very VERY entertaining, and I find myself watching it numerous times as well. But the video itself, setting aside the highlights does not reach the level of Watchung.
I hope no one on Needham has taken offense to my opinion.

I'm a needham player, and i certainly dont take offense to you saying that watchung's editing is betetr, its your opinion and not necessarily wrong in my opinion. however, i dont think watchung's editing was terribly good or original either. and you said needham's vid was mroe entertaining and had better highlights? shouldnt that decide the contest?

Isn't ultimate supposed to have something called "Spirit of the Game"? Why can't we try to apply this to highlight reels as well? I mean, on the field people don't call "pick" every half minute just to stop the flow of the opposing team, so similarly should we really have so much excessive negative commentary (focused on one particular highlight reel)?

the bottom line is, watchung's video was boring, the plays were nothing special, the song is overplayed and redundant, and the use of slow motion is wayyy overdone

Point taken, but one of the reasons that I like the Watchung reel the most is that the vibe it gives off is quite dramatic, and as someone said before, "tells a story".
That may just be my personal taste, but I think that increases the appeal in a good highlight reel.

I disagree on watchung's editing. Editing is not all about timing. The churchill videos are the only ones who actually do any editing to the clips themselves (besides ics). All the other videos were just putting clips to music. I thought the Watchung and Needham videos were awesome, but Churchill's obviously had much more time spent on them in my opinion. I though ICS' video was hilarious but to me it was more of a joke than an actual highlight video. Props to everyone who submitted.

funny- at the Middletown Invitational Watchung Hills managed to play only 2 of the top 5 teams and still win. They played teams that average around 3 points / game (and below) which are what those clips are from. Some are from CHS JV and Amity HS.
CHS B and Amity were some of our early games during the Middletown Invitaional. Along with Chase Collegiate, but most of the highlights during that guy were either blocked by someone on the sideline or just simply missed.
Also, our main cameran suffered a concussion on the first point of the Fieldston game for 2nd place.
Sooo... no camera there.
Watchung was included in the top 5 teams so you know...they only missed out on 2...plus they had to play chase collegiate (1st place) twice.
o come on, we have missed soooo many highlights for various reasons in the past, ya gotta deal with it and not use it as an excuse. this past weekend at the invite, we barely filmed at all, and missed a tonnn of great plays

Always been willing to put my name out there. Like I said before, I'm not trying to trash Needham in any way, I like their reel and I like the team. You can even call me biased, it is definitely possible. But my opinion is my opinion. Props to all the submitions, and I like the girls' highlights too--they have some sick players on those teams. Did I hear the name Claire yelled during one of them? If so, is that Claire Suver? Oh, and the ICS vid is quality entertainment, for sure.

this whole highlight reel thing has gotten out of hand. i don't get what the big deal is. if you liked needham or watchung more, then vote for whichever one u want. theres no need to badmouth the other team's reel. i personally liked churchill's reel. for a team of freshman, that reel was crazy.
russel- we only filmed our first 3 games, which happened to be against CHS B, chase, and then amity. if we could, we would put highlights frmo the other games but as the above comment said, our cameraman was knocked out - literally. if you feel like you still have some ill will towards us because of what happened at that tourney, then talk to us about it, instead of bringing it up in a blog.

better song, clearer filming, and just the plays looked better. the begining of the first one is a not great pull and a crummy group sky where nobody jumps. the second video has some nice catches and layouts and better throws than in the first. over a pretty good video

I thought the first video had better highlights...maybe its just because I got a callahan but we played better at that tournament. Maybe it's the memory of playing more intense ultimate? I love that reel and yes my opinion is extremely biased so just deal with it. Its 1 vote to vid 1 that aint gonna change.

ok so there has been lots of talk aboutwatchung and needham and whose editing is better. just putting this out here chs freshman, hello, you can actually seen their video,its clear also its nice footage. they too sync their music up with their plays. they definatly should win the editors choice and for viewers choice. again how can you have a good highlight if you cant see the footage and if nothing exciting happens. obviously watchung is out. id go with needham or chs freshman. both of their content is impressive, needhams is pretty intense though. it says some to about luke johnson if his freshman team is that go. chs varsity must be good. props.

Actually, I would say blogs and forums are the best places to vent frustration (re: RSD). Also, in my opinion, the best clips are plays in which the two teams are equal. What isn't very impressive is a bid to catch a bad throw, or a D on a bad throw.

people can vote how they want obviously, but it doesnt seem like people are watching all the videos before voting. the wachtung videos are not bad, they are just nothing compared to some others (6 has gotten 0 respect). there is an obvious bias in the voting pool.
video 6 is pretty sick, its just their biggest and best plays arn't as good as the other videos top highlights. there is one sick layout towards the end, but other than that its all decent skies, decent hucks (with huge travels might i add) and run through d's. and its a bad quality video. overall, yea its good, i like it. better than some of the others? needham or churchill? i think not

in the churchill freshman video the player with the black pants and white hat (ian?) and the player with black under armour leggings and a red long sleeved shirt (huge layout halfway through i think its him too) are going to be SO GOOD once they get older. churchill in 2 and 3 years is going to be absolutely amazing if these kids continue to improve as much as they have in the past year or so. that videos definitely in the top 2 or 3 as well
6 is good and full of highlights, but the song selection isn't that great.

the problem with video number 6 is the quality. I think a lot of people saw that it was hard to make out the plays and just stopped watching.
