Pennsbury v. Canada
Hopkins v. Columbia

(Paideia, North Hills have first round byes).

im going to guess
and say

amherst
pennsbury
columbia

Pennsbury beating Amherst 7-3 at one point. I don't know the final score but if anyone has more info on this or other games please share.

Anonymous said...

New England girls beat HB Woodlawn 15-1 and lost to Hopkins 12-11.

Anonymous said...

Amherst won all three pool-play games

Anonymous said...

so they came back on pennsbury?

i find that shocking

Anonymous said...

pennsbury was up 8-4 at half, and amherst scored 6 straight points. pennsbury faught back hard after losing their composure and tied it ten-ten. Amherst scored a downwinder for universe and the game. i think pennsbury looked like the better team and will be in weeks to come but choked under pressure

PHS vs PAIDEIA tomorrow will be the best game of the day

Paideia and Amherst won all pool play games

this just in from rsd

Heard this from Nick Kaczmarek, coach of North Hills:
North Hills went 2-1, beating Hopkins and Columbia, losing to
Paideia.

Semi Final Matchups

Anyone know how Columbia looked? It seems from the results that they underachieved.

Anonymous said...

columbia came out lazy in their later pool play games

defintely underachieved

Anonymous said...

Columbia Sucks, they have one or two players and will not make much noise this year.

Unknown said...

you dont have to say they suck
they're still a good team

looks like the east invite held seed perfectly in every pool. impressive tournament seeding.

Anonymous said...

How was the weather in Atlanta today?

Anonymous said...

Fifth place bracket anyone?

Anonymous said...

pennsbury got beat pretty bad by paideia and lost in the third place game to amherst 9-7.

Anonymous said...

Paideia girls beat Hopkins in finals. Hopkins girls is a very young team don't know much about Paideia

Kyle Weisbrod said...

All of the scores are now up on the UPA website. Please e-mail me if I made any mistakes (I don't think I did as I have the score sheets with me, but it is possible).

I think winds gusting at 50mph is an exageration, but it was windy. I imagine the gusts were in the 35-40mph range with a constant 15-20mph wind.

The Paideia Girls are also young - only three seniors and a lot of talent in the freshman class.

Kyle et. al.

Are teams still scheduled to fly back home despite the many cancellations all over? Any plans to host teams Sunday night as well?

- a concerned fan

ps. Thanks to Kyle and the Paideia family for putting on a great tournament for the second straight year.

Anonymous said...

Congrats to North Hills getting to the championship. Looks like they can beat Pennsbury in the games to come. And I'm pretty sure no matter what the weather would have been Paidiea would have won mr. anonymous. I'm pretty sure they are the best team. No one has hit double digits against them this year.

"Hopkins is a joke this year. they will barely make it to quarters. they lost everyone that was good on their team."

Jimmy Hooper

Hate to say it, but it looks like seattle might be right again. I thought hopkins was gonna put on a better show, but i guess not. They lost all of their games. maybe Jimmy is right? come westerns we will know.

Kyle Weisbrod said...

As far as flights home, I haven't heard of anyone having their flights cancelled, but I imagine it will happen looking at the weather.

I am sure if it does happen, we'll figure out a way to house them if necessary.

And just so no one thinks we're crazy for hosting a tournament here in Atlanta this time of year, I promise the weather is not typically like this. Check out the 10-day forecast http://www.weather.com/outlook/travel/businesstraveler/tenday/30324?from=36hr_topnav_business.

to the person who said pa state champs will be a dogfight--not at all. maybe you meant easterns, but pennsbury are taking PA states no question even if they didnt show up big against paideia or amherst

Anonymous said...

agreed, next year will be north hills' peak, they dont have the size or athelticism to run with pennsbury...yet

Anonymous said...

Were any of the open team representing more then one high school...are the teams that played the same ones that will pay at Nationals?

Anonymous said...

So the most anyone put up on Paideia was 6 (by Columbia and North Hills).

I agree with the person who said that Columbia came out lazy in their later pool play games. They played very badly against North Hills.

gapoole said...

I don't know whether Anonymous 2:04 actually saw the games...I did not, however it looks like a stretch to say that a good team played "very badly" when they beat Hopkins and lost to the 1st and 2nd place teams, tying the highest score against Paideia for the weekend. Maybe they didn't play at their peak, but I don't know if they played "very badly."

Anonymous said...

I know this is the thread about the east coast tournaments, but Spring Reign is this weekend. Can we get a thread up about it? after all, its the "biggest in the world", with 80 teams.

It really bothers me that people on this site can't ever accept game results. There are so many posts like "they had a bad game" "they were tired" "they got lucky" "we were missing players". Suck it up, when you represent your team, there are no excuses, play your heart out. Whether you win or loose, don't try to belittle another team's accomplishments.

I just don't see how anyone can say that any team can "no doubt TEAM X" will win this, or "kill your team". The only team that has proven that they are good enough to back up these claims is Paideia, and they have respectfully not bragged across this site.

As far as this quote goes:
"[North Hills] don't have the size or athleticism to run with Pennsbury...yet"

This is not correct. North Hills has proven themselves that they can match up against the country's best. North Hills has a lot more size and athleticism than their two talented handlers Alex Thorne and Ben Funk, they have a lot of size and athleticism coming from their bigger players (and they definitely have some). Pennsbury vs. North Hills will be a vicious, hard fought and close match, and no one can rightfully say that one team is obviously better than the other.

A big congratulations to both Paideia Open and Women on the wins this weekend.

Anonymous said...

i don't think anyone was saying that Columbia lost because they came out flat, they were just saying that they came out weak without implying consequences. But after a Columbia time out they began playing their asses off. They still could not work it through the North Hills zone, and North Hills won. They are both great teams, and it was a great game to watch after CHS woke up. I believe CHS still would have lost if they played hard throughout but the score might have been closer. North Hills and Columbia had some great plays throughout the tournament. One guy from CHS jumped over a guy from Hopkins, and North Hills had some ridiculous skies and incredible hucks. They both played well. Don't take anything away from them.

Pennsbury beat North Hills like 15-8 or something... so we HAVE seen this matchup. Not to say North Hills couldn't beat them, they certainly could. But in terms of respecting the results of games? Pennsbury is up 1-0

On Hopkins..
The Hopkins kid played lazy and came in way to confident.....in the Columbia game someone almost did get jumped over...but it was more of a tackle...but didnt anyone see # 75 on Hopkins Hurt goes ball out in the last point of the Paidea game...he is only a sophomore who picked up a disc in the fall and is a kid to watch with Hopkins young handler # 4....Hopkins is just in a reloading year but 75, and 4 will be great players in the future

Anonymous said...

the person who got jumped over (sort of) was number 75

lol

Anonymous said...

i heard north hills had some spirt confits against amherst does anyone have any input on this?

Anonymous said...

they were running through their marks and bumping players when they came up to the stall count, from what i saw

Anonymous said...

The game was competitive...that is that...On field the teams played with heart and there was no anger or unspirited play. It was a great game to watch. Further, North Hills played extremely impressively and came back in the end for a well fought and truly deserved win. Amherst's reign is over. To comment on the bumping marks and such...I noticed no such actions. I did notice however, Amherst sideline being very provoking and unspirited...directing their loud cheers at the North Hills team at every 'Cane score instead of toward their own team in happiness. Overall it was a very clean game and everyone had a great time untill North Hills brought it back for the win...Supposedly North Hills gave Amherst a 5 spirit and Amherst gave them a 0. At that point Amherst was in complete frustration...

Anonymous said...

As a player who played against North Hills the only lack of spirit i saw from them was on scores...even though spiking is fun it should never be done in such a tournament as Paidea...otherwise all the teams (especially Paidea) had great spirit.

-PLAYER

Anonymous said...

Spiking is done in competative ultimate all throughout the united states. Take a look at college ultimate. I do understand it is harmful to the disc..that is the accepted argument nowadays. But, North Hills spikes seemed to be never aimed toward the other teams failure but more toward their accomplishment. At every score their team rushed the field high fiving around. There was never once a spike that could have been considered foul spirited in my opinion.

Anonymous said...

people need to stop associating spiking with poor spirit, at least if the spike is not directed at opposing players. spiking is just fine when it is not, it gets players on your own team pumped and can be helpful.

Anonymous said...

and sweet as hell

Anonymous said...

but the spikes were in cocly celebration...and one was even thrown at another player...which is never acceptable

Nick Kaczmarek said...

I am not going to get involved in this discussion and neither will any North Hills player, but I want to assure you that no "spike" was thrown AT another player.

-Nick Kaczmarek (North Hills Boys, Coach)

Anonymous said...

agreed, at another player is a no-no...but celebratorial? thats fine

Anonymous said...

North Hills played great all weekend long. They are very highly skilled and well coached my hat is off to Nick and the rest of the North Hills crew.

When we played against them they played spirited, clean, and respectful towards all of my players.

Paideia Cup was a great tournament, there was competitive play, and it was very well done. Thank you to the Paideia Families, and Michael/Kyle for putting on a great tournament.

Anthony Nunez
Columbia High School Coach

Anonymous said...

I happen to disagree with that claim because one was thrown at a player on my team....but otherwise the spikes were just there to pump up the team.

-Hurt # 75

Anonymous said...

please hurt 75 stop posting, you dont know what you are talking about, from talking to other hurt members you are just a rookie that doesnt even get the game yet. so you should wait to start talking bud

LittlePrince said...

yo to the last comment you are ridiculous, who are you? Are you some chump why post that and sign anonymous and about spiking i feel they are to pump up teams but i think paideia asked teams not to.. that is the only problem that i could see in spiking

Anonymous said...

spiking is fine, in fact, its good for the game. when another team scores on me and spikes it, the only thing i wanna do is play that much harder, because i wanna spike it right back. it gets me, and most people on my team fired up. you dont like spiking? dont get scored on

-p.s. i am not a player on any team involved in this discussion so dont get any ideas and get mad at the players on the teams being discussed

Anonymous said...

spiking is fine as long as the disc is not damaged. and i agree, spiking is a part of the game. just like it is in football. would u rather have us dancing like those idiots in pro football?

Anonymous said...

dont make analogies between ultimate and pro football, there is no clause in pro football involving spirit of the game, and theyre are getting paid for that.

Isaac

Anonymous said...

there are very few times where a spike is not directed at the other team. you don't spike if there was no opposition to the throw and it was an easy no contest score. you spike when you just beat out a defender for the grab and score. even if you don't spike the disc on that person its directed towards the other team. teams that spike plain and simple aren't fun to play against. and if you end up losing you just look even worse. and in this case of Paideia, if it is true that Paideia asked teams not to spike than that is horribly disrespectful that they did. basically this is a high school sport, don't compare it to college ultimate or anything, it's high school ultimate, the point is to have fun, and not at the expense of the other teams.

Anonymous said...

did paideia ask teams not to spike?

Anonymous said...

"teams that spike plain and simple aren't fun to play against."

uhh wrong. While spiking could be interpreted as being disrespectful to the other team, it also is a way to raise the intensity and level of play in a game. When someone spikes it, it is pumping their team up and creating a positive vibe for their team. It is not always directed towards the other team nor is it always a negative action. So your pretty much just wrong and you should never talk about spiking again.

Anonymous said...

please you guys. show some respect for each other as players. this isnt RSD.

Anonymous said...

i think paidea asked people not to spike because it was tacoing the game discs...

Anonymous said...

that makes sense, but not all spikes taco discs.

Anonymous said...

I do not believe that tacoing the game disc was any concern at the paidea cup being that every player recieved a brand new disc for free. I think it was more of a respect issue more than anything since these teams are soposted to be the best in the country. The only time i see spiking the disc is only when you score a rediculous point. (nice layout grab, huge ski, ect)

Anonymous said...

best spike i've ever seen was down in paideia. north hills had a player submission spike the disc. it was sick. as long as spiking doesn't bend/manipulate the disc, its fine. and of course as long as its not towards the other team.
