Weekend Tournaments and Games - Discussion

Lots of high school ultimate this weekend (as well as a ton of sweet posts on the blog, just scroll through the archives and check them all out.)

so lets hear what people have to say a few of the big things -

  • Amherst loses Needham 8-11, this is the first time in i believe 4 years they have been beaten?
  • Pennsbury wins over Yorktown in the finals of the YHB Invite
  • Lexington Catholic, out of Kentucky, has 12 wins under their belt with their only losses coming at the hands of large colleges
  • Paideia has an undefeated season thus far apparently playing against University School of Nashville (Tenn.) and Andover High School (Mass.) this weekend.
So very interesting stuff, lets hear the comments..

congrats to needham and pennsbury for their wins. It looks like columbia brought an x and y team to the YHB invite, does anybody know how they looked or why they played x and y?

heres what was on the other thread, since this would definitely be the place to write it:

"This probably isn't the place for this, but I just wanted to congratulate Needham High School on their win against us this weekend. They are a disciplined, athletic, well-coached, spirited and athletic team and we really enjoyed playing against them. Well-done!

Tiina"

"it was a really hard fought game. full intensity on defense the entire game. ARHS switched it up with zone and man, but Needham kept with really tight man defense giving them nothing. The game opened up neck and neck, tieing it up at 2-2, than Needham went on a run and the first half went 7-2 Needham, but ARHS came out fired up trying to get rid of Needham's fire in the second half either scoring 3 in a row, or going on a 3-1 run. Than from there, they traded back and forth until the hard cap, with 11-8 being the final score. It was an amazing game, with cheering and yelling from the sidelines that you could hear across the entire tournament"

As the YHB DC Invite Tournament Director I wanted to congratulate Pennsbury on an awesome game against us in the championship. There was hot D's on both sides and it got really intense second half. It was a tough loss but we had a great time playing you guys and we hope to get a re-match next weekend at Born To Dive.

Paideia beat Andover High in the finals of Terminus this weekend 15-6. They are obviously a really good team and should have another tremendous season this year.

princeton seems to have done a lot better than expected at yhb, making it to semis and going 6-9 on pennsbury??

As captain of P-HUC, i am so pleased that we got third considering how many players we lost from last year. But what i am most happy about is the fact that we played this tournament with 9 players. Much of our team had other things this weekend, but the 9 that we brought played amazingly.

YHB put on a great tournament and also played a great tournament! Congrats also to Pennsbury for having yet another tournament finals win under their belts.

CHS went X and Y for several reasons. This was the first tournament since the fall for CHS and we wanted to give the B team and some of the younger A team players some experience of playing in a strong tournament. Also we were missing three to four of our better A team players for this tournament so we figured why not split the talent right down the middle and get everyone playing time. CHS X made it to the quarters and lost to YHB. CHS Y won the bottom bracket in the finals against a tough woodside team 13-5.

Again great playing this weekend by everyone!

CHS x and CHS Y

The UPA site says that CHS X beat Hampton on the second day, which is untrue. CHS forfeit that game.

any upsets during the YHB Invite?

I want to start off saying that I do not go to Paideia, never went there and will not go there, but I think Paideia is not going to lose this year. How good was madison west? Why did ARHS lose? I can guess they didn't score as much as the other team, but were they missing players, did a lot of players graduate, or is this just going to be a less than average year for them?

i play for needham and i can tell you that the amherst game was the toughest game i have ever played in. hands down. i reeeaaalllly look foward to playing them down the road. they have a lot of talent and im sure that after a few weeks of practice they will be more than ready to return to the top.

The Amherst string of victories over the last few years has been amazing. I think it is going to be difficult for another team to reproduce this feat as more teams become competitive. Padeia has a great shot at going undefeated this year, but next year after losing their 3 worlds players they will be vulnerable. The increased competition at the upper levels is a great thing for the sport! It is going to be healthy when another team wins besides Amherst or Padeia.

what about the northwest schools current win streak? i feel like they havn't lost in the past season or two, winning westerns and i think only losing at college tournaments. and they probably wont lose this year either.

Anonymous said...

From already having played them, I would say that it is very likely that they could go undefeated against HS teams this year. If anyone is to upset them this year it will probably be Hopkins or Churchill. I don't know if there are other teams that would pose enough of a threat. Churchill lost to them 12-7 at PLU and didn't get to play them at Dirty Deeds. Churchill did beat Victoria 13-7 at Dirty Deeds and that same day NWS lost to them 13-10. (Not that that really says anything though). We played amazing against them and I don't think it was NWS best game. So, there is a chance they could be beat this year, but it is definitely slim. They have virtually the same team as last year.

wait...what about pennsbury being 35-0 from fall til now (in hs play)

Anonymous said...

I think that no one has a chance against paideia, but pennsbury is definetly a team that can give them a game. Needham has shown they will definitely be a contender at Easterns this year and with 14 seniors they can run the table in eastern mass.

Does anyone know actual scores from Terminus? We all know Paideia won but how did the other teams fair?

Anonymous said...

Wasn't Needham crushed at Fall Brawl by Columbia 15-5?

Anonymous said...

they also lost to pennsbury like 15-3. but it looked like they were savage for the weekend? or at least had a lot of jv players on the field

Anonymous said...

At fall brawl NHS was missing several of their starting players and had B-Teamers subbing in for them

Anonymous said...

Terminus results. I don't know who Paideia played in the first semifinal to get to the finals, but Andover High defeated Phillips Andover (Blue Steel) 12-9 in an all-Andover semifinal to get to the finals. Paideia beat Andover 15-6 in the finals, but Andover really made Paideia work hard for most of their points and it was a very good game despite the lopsided score.

what are the top 10 teams for the east coast?

Anonymous said...

I would say:
Paideia HS
Pennsbury
Amherst
North Hills
Needham
Columbia
Nashville
Madison West
Mt. Lebanon
Yorktown

But I may of left someone out or I could have some bias.

how much of an advantage do these southern teams have on midwest and northern teams having been able to play outside for much longer. does this give paideia and pennsbury a slight edge over amherst, hopkins, madison west...

Anonymous said...

Trust me, Pennsbury's got no edge over anyone. We missed weeks of practice time due to snow in march.

Anonymous said...

if you havent noticed..Needham BEAT Amherst

Anonymous said...

soooo all were talkin bout really is east coast teams. It's undisputedd that Northwest dominates the west coast but i guess the east coast is alot more close.

East Coast:

1. paidea
2. Pensburry
3. Needham
4. Amerst

I dont think that Paidea could beat Northwest. It would be a crazy game but Northwest is just too deep.

Anonymous said...

ok lets talk about western teams

top 10 anyone?

Anonymous said...

1. Northwest
2. Nathan Hale
3. Churchill
4. Axemen
5. Hopkins (maybe they graduated like 20 seniors)
6. Seattle academy
7. Lakeside
8. no idea
9. no idea
10. no idea

Anonymous said...

id switch hale and churchill

Anonymous said...

i agree, i think that Churchill Open is going to come into the finals.

However, I think that the real upset will be Churchill girls. I have seen them play as a full squad only once, but it was impressive, and they solidly beat teams that beat Nathan Hale. Not to mention they won a college tournament. They have a deep (and young) roster and will be in the finals for this year, and years to come(my opinion.)

and for the record, I dont go to churchill. i live in seattle, where we eat oregonians for breakfast...(usually)...

i ummm agree with hale #2 i live in seattle as well. Churchill girls are very good but idkd if they can be Northwest or Hale.

I don't think that the east coast can possibly be clear after the top two, but based on fall and early spring results, Paideia and Pennsbury seem a cut above. But North Hills and Columbia had better fall seasons than Needham, and I wouldn't hesitate to put either ahead of both Needham and Amherst.

Nobody out of the south except Paideia looks ready to challenge the mid-atlantic teams like Yorktown and Princeton, although Lexington is a big unknown. But who knows, they might end up like the Queens-Kingston and Dalhousie teams of a few years ago that were undefeated for a long part of the season but found out at Nationals and Regionals respectively.

Paideia Cup will be the first chance for big name teams to bring their A game and start establishing seeds for Easterns.

Anonymous said...

All needham did was wake a sleeping giant. A win streak can take a team and make them feel comfortable and almost too relaxed. I can see Amherst taking this loss and working harder then ever to make sure it does not happen again.

Paideia is a force but are they going to easterns? If not, Pennsbury, Amherst in the finals, and Columbia and Needham losing in the semis. North Hills, HB, Nashvill, princeton losing in the quarters.

Anonymous said...

What's the word on St. Johns Ravencourt. Are they any good?

Anonymous said...

SJR will be the surprise of the tournament. They tend to be the top team in Canada, and most of the Canadian Juniors team comes from their school. Many of their players were on the YCC Mixed Champion team last year.

Anonymous said...

needham's fall consisted of half the team having jobs and learning a new offense with no field time. the tournaments they went to had half their A team and they played a lot of younger newer players for experience, while trying to learn new things. they're definitely got a shot at being the top team in massachusetts, and make it to finals of easterns. the amherst invite tho, with amherst, needham, paideia, pennsbury and columbia. to see which 4 of those 5 teams make the semi's will be pretty amazing.

Anonymous said...

SJR last year was amazing, like 13-0 or something, and the closest game they played they won by 4 or 5 I think. However this is a new year and I have no idea how many seniors they had last year. Also, Northwest is amazing, but Paideia has 2 players on Chain, I would really like to see them play each other this year, but it probably won't happen.

Anonymous said...

needham went to fall brawl and came in third to pennsbury/columbia beating princeton for the third place consolation game.

If i recall correctly Princeton was dead tired and were demoralized from a close game to columbia.

Is needham hiding some amazing players, because if not then maybe Amherst isn't so unbeatable.

Needham has a sick player by the name of Andrew Lunetta.

Anonymous said...

Noah Saul beat up on Lunetta all fall brawl long.....Pennsbury will beat needham this year with one hand tied behind their backs

Anonymous said...

yikes man. thats a low blow. however, im very much looking forward to our next game with pennsbury so needham can show off more than a squad of 10 players, half being B teamers... like the team we fielded at fall brawl.
anyway, if that last comment was looking to strike a nerve with me, your gonna have to do better than that. Noah is a very, very talented player. he was an alternate for the junior worlds team, i was nothing. but, in my defense, i and my team have improved several times over of since fall brawl. so pennsbury, im pumped for our game. and whoever left that last comment, im looking forward to playing your team as well.

Peace y'all,
Andrew Lunetta

Noah Saul is a great player, and probably better than Lunetta, but over and over I hear people talking about "the 3 junior worlds players" on Paideia, well Mark Dundala and Scott Wright are just about the best wingmen Noah can ask for, although they don't receive the credit. Paideia is nasty and a team of kids who has been playing ultimate their whole lives, Pennsbury is a bunch of freak atheletes who will play harder than you, and thats why they could beat anyone in the country if they bring it. Amherst will always be in it at the end, so everyone calm down. Columbia Needham and North Hills are three teams who are very capable of upsetting some very very good teams. Of those three, I would say Needham is probably the best close ahead of Columbia. Everyone should just save the smack talk until post-Paideia Cup, because then there will be no excuses. (Bummer Needham isn't going)

Anonymous said...

paideia cup, in the end, will show who is who in hs ultimate this year. all i have to say is that pennsbury better live up to all the hype that they are giving themselves.

Anonymous said...

wait up there.

PC has: AI has:
CHS CHS
Paideia Paideia
Pennsbury Pennsbury
ARHS ARHS
Hopkins Needham
St John's Ravenscourt Lexington
North Hill Andover
U. School Nashville NIPMUC
ARHS JVA
Longmeadow

So 4 top teams are at both, As for the other 6 teams at AI, Lexington was 6th nationwide last year, Longmeadow has Alex Kapinos (played on Junior worlds team), JVA is from Amherst, and Andover and NIPMUC are both very solid teams. I don't no anything about the other 4 teams at PC, but North Hill and Nashville seem very good if RRI is anything to base on.

So yea, i really don't think you can say that everything comes down to Paideia Cup since AI is pretty stacked. Oh and everyone on Needham is upset that we aren't goin to PC, but what can you do?

Geo, #11 Needham

amherst invite as well. it's got the same top teams but switch hopkins for needham, and the rest of the local teams with massachusetts teams.

That list of teams came out really bad

PC has:
CHS
Paideia
Pennsbury
ARHS
Hopkins
St John's Ravenscourt
North Hill
U. School Nashville

AI has:
CHS
Paideia
Pennsbury
ARHS
Needham
Lexington
Andover
NIPMUC
ARHS JVA
Longmeadow

Who won the girls division of YHB?

Anonymous said...

Churchill high school from Eugene is disappointed that we won't be attending either PC or AI... We really, really wanted to be there at PC, but the cost of airfare was ridiculous... Bummer that Northwest won't be at either tournament... they would have brought some serious game.

Dont be so quick to make assumptions...

Pennsbury players dont really post on this blog in less their name is specifically mentioned, so maybe there is a chance the ultimate community in general might be giving us some credit.
