Worlds Tryouts - Atlanta

Word on the street is that Ollie Honderd played just as well as his Michigan teammates at Centex. Who else impressed? Who looks like a lock to make the team, and who would you pick? 40 players attended tryouts - some unheralded players seemed to make a splash, like Nick from Florida, while other players didn't quite seem to belong. Let's hear all of this weekend's Worlds chatter.

Jeremy Norden and Milo Snyder looked mighty solid, also. Milo was super quick and benefited some, perhaps, by not running the mile saturday (cramps), so had some punch in his legs sunday others may have lacked. Still, he's real tough to guard.

Andrew Lunetta looked pretty good, as did Jonah Herscue and Sam K-S.

top 10 anyone?

Anonymous said...

Healthy bit of wind, particularly on Saturday. Sunday started out calmer, but the wind picked up considerably throughout the afternoon, making for a good test for the players - both boys and girls fields were oriented facing the same direction.

Anonymous said...

is it true Lunetta has not played much since the end of high school, if he could do that and still look good, imagine what could lie ahead as he gets back into game shape

Anonymous said...

what would people's teams look like? (assuming 20 spots)

Anonymous said...

Was most of the talent in college? Cuz alot of the names being thrown out seem to be college players. How was the high school talent?

Anonymous said...

I guess only people who were at both tryouts could answer this, right?

Andrew Lunetta is taking a year off doing City Year in Cleveland. He picked up with Jawbone in the fall playing at chicago heavyweights and club sectionals, has practiced/played some with case western college, and played some indoor leagues. So yes, he's played...but not much at all, and all with not good teams

Whoa there. With all due respect...

Jawbone and Case Western Reserve are both very respectable teams.

As someone that plays for both of them (and also a Seattle tryout), I cant let someone say that that they are not good teams. (you would defend your team as well)

Indoor League is also not for chumps in Cleveland.

Andrew might not have been playing on elite club/college teams this year, but he puts constant effort, time, and dedication into all aspects of his game that more than makeup for any shortcomings that may arise from such "limitations" (A good player should be a good player no matter where he plays.)I have a lot of respect for him as a player, and I think he has the same respect for the teams he's played on while he's been in Cleveland.

how did the Paideia kids do? the Terry brothers?

I had a hard time picking a universe point line because everybody there was straight up awesome at ultimate. In general, the college freshmen were making a bigger difference on the field than the high schoolers, but my lasting impression was just how solid everybody there was.

I was also very impressed by the high level of spirit and sportsmanship displayed by all present. It was more like an intense team practice than a competitive tryout. Everybody was cheering on everybody else, even though we were all competing for a spot.

All in all, a great weekend.

anyone notice how the beacon kids played? I think there were 2 there- lorenzo and brandon.

Anonymous said...

when do the kids find out if they have made the team?

Players should find out on March 31st.

I'm gonna say Tommy Li and Jonah Herscue were the two best high school players on the East coast at the tryout. Jonah is a sophomore which is just ridic.

Anonymous said...

jonah is tight. significantly better than his older brother.

Anonymous said...

jonah is the older brother...you must be talking about misha. jonah looked good on O, but didnt stand out on D

Anonymous said...

Any big plays on the weekend? Sick D's, Nice Sky's?

Anonymous said...

actually Jonah is the younger brother. doesnt seem like it, but really.

Is there any feedback about the girls that tried out?

Tommy said...

I agree with many of the previous lists, but there were other unmentioned players that I thought played real good ultimate over the weekend. Tim Morrisey played very well this weekend. Josh Cincotta definitely impressed me with his athleticism, as well as Seth Collins.

As for the Beacon kids, unfortunately I did not see Lorenzo nor Brendon Beiler at the tryout. I didn't see them on the roster either. That would be hilarious to see Bueno at the tryouts though!

I totally agree with the previous comment in that it felt like an intense practice rather than a tryout- the positivity and energy was overwhelming and it brought everyone to a level where we were having tons of fun and also playing intense ultimate. It was the most fun I've had playing ultimate ever, and I would gladly do it again. I feel whichever team is going to Vancouver is going to win not only on the field but overwhelmingly on the sideline as well.

The standout highschool kids were tommy and josh...thats really it. The college kids were far better, ollie and jeremy (on it in 06') milo, sam and russell, were real good.

is there a list of all those accepted to try outs online somewhere?

Anonymous said...

youthultimate.com had one up, but i heard that the upa threatened them to get them to take it down...the upa still hasn't released anything--go figure...

Anonymous said...

uhh personally i think the upa is totally cool.

Anonymous said...

We did post a version of the lists on our website. However, the UPA asked us to take it down since they were not a complete lists. We took them down at the UPA's request.

John and Michael Terry

How did you guys obtain the list?

The Pulse said...

Any of the tryouts can get a list of the people at their tryout by going to the UPA rostering section of the website and checking out which teams they're rostered to. Worlds tryouts count as a "team" and you can see a list of your "teammates."

Personally, I think that journalists owe more to their readers than to the UPA, and posting a disclaimer that the lists weren't complete would have been a better compromise. That, or the UPA posting a list.

I don't think the Terry's have been mentioned enough. John had a great tryout. I remember him getting a big layout D, thinking that he would get no where near the disc. He also had a few great skies; again being very surprised that he got the disc. Other than that, he played very fundamentally and I didn't see hardly any mistakes.

Michael was coming off a three week injury so naturally his tryout was worse. However, I saw him make some nice grabs. Healthy, he's the type of big man/defender that could match up well against Nick from Fla. or Sam K-S.

I'm just saying don't be shocked or upset if either of them make the team.

I was lucky enough to be around for the entire weekend and all I have to say is.... wow.

The energy, skill, intensity, spirit, and spectacularly high level of play were all massively impressive.

As I do when I'm not coaching I took lots of pictures of the weekend. They are all online in the acultimate.com gallery.

Nick, Josh, Alex, Tommy, Tim High School Ballers!

Anonymous said...

The college kids did look good.
Ollie was super solid as always, and playing with Michigan has been beneficial.
Russell was probably had the best tryouts.
Sam K-S was good, but he was also sick the week before the tryout, and wasn't playing his best.
Andrew had sweet throws, but not playing except for Jawbone showed.
Milo I hadn't seen before, and he was really fast, no one could stay with him.
Yep those were my observations.

I'm still surprised no one has mentioned Tim Morrissy from CHS. Fundamentals my boys, fundamentals.

Ollie is a baller.

What terrible picks. How could the UPA not pick Jimmy Hooper, Matt R, and Allan L. It seems that the the UPA had an east coast bias even though at YCC seattle tossed everyone. Matt R is the best high school player in the nation period!.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous 12:17 I couldn't agree more the UPA made terrible choices for the open team. I would have expected better. But I guess you can't from an organization that didn't pick nate.
