Junior World's Try-outs...

Tonight the first batch of emails began to be sent out to the juniors players whom applied for the try-out and a chance to represent their country at the Junior World Championships in Vancouver, BC on August 2nd-9th.

The Junior division will have teams from all over the world, but before our US boys and girls team can get there, the UPA has organized a thorough try-out process that will put the best talent in both Atlanta & Seattle. Tonight up to 80 of the top talent are receiving an email asking them to come attend one of the try-out camps. Players have until February 10th to confirm that they are still interested and able to attend one of the camps on either March 8/9 or 22/23. Then on March 31st, the teams will be announced with up to 20 players per team making it along with 4-6 alternates. After that, the real work begins and the plan can be seen here on the UPA pages.

So, if you're willing to let us know, many out there would be curious what 80 have been invited? And possibly just as interesting, though I know it may be difficult to share, who has not been invited?

So... Who's going?

Tommy Sanchez, Seattle Tryout Camp

Anonymous said...

Tommy Sanchez- Where are you from and who do you play for?

Unknown said...

Carly Maconaghy (of Sepda/Wicked/Penn State) is in for the women.

I don't know if Noah Saul got accepted (it would be a crime if he wasn't), but Centex is at the same time as tryouts which might affect him.

Anonymous said...

David Schrieber, I played for Churchill and am now at Gonzaga (GURU).

Anonymous said...

All of these people from Eugene, OR and are going to the tryout camp in Seattle:

Claire Neyman- Churchill Sophomore
Lisa Neyman- Churchill Senior
Kimber Coles- Churchill Senior
Christine Wilson- Churchill Junior
Lily Burge-Herd- Churchill Junior

Dylan Freechild- South Eugene Soph.
Jacob Janin- South Eugene Senior
David Schrieber- Churchill Grad (currently attending Gonzaga University)
Collin Smith- Church Grad (Currently attending Whitman College)

also from eugene...

Kati Dahn-Churchill Junior
Caitlin Jost- Churchill Junior

John Bloch- South Grad (currently attending UO)

Anonymous said...

who (that made it) attended YCC and who didnt? how much of a factor was that new YCC scouting in terms of your chances of making tryouts?

Anonymous said...

Well none of the aforementioned guys from Eugene went to YCC, since Oregon didn't get a bid. And all the girls from Eugene were at YCC.

Anonymous said...

Austin Sharp- South Eugene Senior

Anonymous said...

is the UPA going to put out a list of all those invited to tryouts?

Unknown said...

I doubt it. They wouldn't until after Feb 10th anyway which is the deadline for confirming your acceptance of the invitation. If people decline they will invite more people.

The following Pittsburgh people were invited:

Julian Hausman (Pitt) says he is declining for Centex.

Colin Connor (North Hills)

Maria Bajzek is going to the Seattle tryout.

Anonymous said...

there were also 6 players from eugene who did not make it i believe. 3 freshman girls, 1 freshman boy, 1 sophomore boy, and 1 junior boy.

Anonymous said...

they put out a list last year, so I would assume they do it again this year.

Anonymous said...

Isaac Saul is goin

Anonymous said...

For Eugene it was 3 sophomore girls.. not freshmen but yeah, same difference.

Unknown said...

Two more Pittsburgh kids: Liz Clark and Ben Funk (who also says he can't go)

So right now it looks like at least 3 bubble boys will get into the Atlanta camp.

Also, I don't think there were that many more applicants than spots for girls, so I wouldn't expect to hear of too many rejections there.

Is Noah Saul attending try outs?

or any other former worlds players?

Here's the current hearsay list:

Seattle:

Tommy Sanchez

David Schrieber
Collin Smith
John Bloch
Austin Sharp

Claire Neyman
Lisa Neyman
Kimber Coles
Christine Wilson
Lily Burge
Kati Dahn
Caitlin Jost
Maria Bajzek

Atlanta

Noah Saul (Likely declining)
Julian Hausman (Likely declining)
Ben Funk (Likely declining)

Ooh, Patrick, missing Stanford Invite ... don't know if I like that ...

Anonymous said...

What do you make of those players who may choose to miss tryouts for a college tournament. The chance to represent your country comes along once (_maybe_ twice) in your life. You'll play at least four maybe five Centex, Stanford Invite, etc and lots of important tournaments beyond.

Unknown said...

It's tough to speak for other people, but here's a couple theories:

1) They have "outgrown" youth ultimate. Being in college, they no longer feel the need to compete with youth. This doesn't imply that they think they are better players than those at worlds, simply that they don't feel the need.

2) Your college team is your family. Missing a major tournament (even if it's not the series) to be with some other team (even team USA) is kind of a big deal.

Anonymous said...

some people got better offers for the summer then ultimate. For instance I am studying abroad in Jerusalum this summer, rather then staying home and playing ultimate, which is why I didnt apply to worlds

what about all of the junior worlds players from 2006 that are still young enough?

grant lindsley, ollie honderd and george stubbs from paideia
jeremey norden and casey ikeda from northwest. and sam k-s too

Anonymous said...

not an official source, but word is is that stubbs may have done something to his knee and lindsley is a starter for CUT so i'm not sure he would miss stanford for worlds considering he's already won the tournament, thats why i think he's a slightly different case than patrick roberts.

Anonymous said...

Jimmy Hooper will be at the Seattle tryouts

JHaus said...

Alex was correct in his 2nd assumption for me. I believe in making commitments, and sticking to them. I committed to the Pitt Ultimate program first and working as hard as I can for them. I have a role on the team, and it's my job to get it done. That means going to every tournament I can with Pitt, especially the two highest competition tournaments before the college series. Yes, perhaps I am missing a "once-in-a-lifetime" opportunity, but that means that someone is getting that chance instead. It's really unfortunate that these try-outs were scheduled how they were, I really wanted to be there.

Good luck to everyone in the try-outs,
-Julian Hausman

Anonymous said...

cut players alex evangilides grant lindsley and patrick roberts are all going to seattle.

Kyle Weisbrod said...

People have to prioritize in life. If they choose to prioritize something over trying-out for Worlds (like their college team or some other life event) that is certainly their choice.

Having been involved with the try-outs in 2004 and 2006 and knowing what players get out of it, if I were a college coach or captain I would definitely encourage freshmen who were invited to try-out to go to the try-outs. Not even considering the possibility of making the team the opportunity to compete with and against the best players of your age in the country with instruction from the best coaches in the country is a unique experience.

But, ultimately, it is each player's decision on what is more important to him or her.

Just saw that youthultimate.com has a list.

I sent them an email about the west list, and they said they were actively working on it, and should have it up by tomorrow.

I'm surprised they would release a list before the confirmation deadline. I guess now we get to know who wasn't good enough to make the first cut...

Anonymous said...

what is this youthultimate.com site all about? are they seriously trying to be 'the most reliable' news source in youth ultimate? isn't that what playultimate is?

i got to admit that they got a great domain name for being the most reliable, but why the urge to do what playultimate is already doing better?

how many of the people on the list are graduates? - i feel like its more this year than in 2006, so the competition for graduates is a lot steeper.

are there any names that no one recognizes?

is anyone that made it doing anything special to prepare?

Anonymous said...

i think at least 6 of the tryout kids were on the 2006 team...and have probably all graduated by this point. that doesnt leave...any spots really for anyone else (that has graduated), assuming that theyve gotten any better (or even stayed the same if they were good enough to make it 2 years ago)

do you think the UPA will pick all/most of the returning team members again for another round? is that "fair"? whats your all opinions?

does anyone know when the list of girls will be revealed?

so what happened to the list up on that other youth site? it was there this morning and now its gone. did anyone copy it so they can post it here?

So now that we know who has been picked for tryouts, who is going to get picked for the actual team

Anonymous said...

from hopkins, aside from sam brickwedde,
Greg Arenson may be going for open in seattle

as for girls, Erin Curme, Elise Rasmussen, and Erica Baken are going to seattle

Just an idea of what the team might look like:

1. Jacob Janin
2. Misha Herscu
3. Andrew Kieffer
4. Michael Terry
5. John Terry
6. Julian Childs-Walker
7. Isaac Saul
8. Josh Cincotta
9. Tim Morrissy
10. Sam Brickwedde
11. Jimmy Hooper
12. Matt Rehder

College players are a little more interesting. The west tryout camp seems to have a collection of strong college players (grant, george, casey ikeda, jeremy norden) but I don't that means all six college players will come from the west tryout.

13. Grant Lindsley
14. George Stubbs
15. Collin Smith
16. Jeremy Norden
17. Noah Saul
18. Andrew Lunetta

what is all this noah saul talk, he isnt even that good (lindsley stubbs and northwest trio are much better)

also, that list looks pretty bad of possible high schoolers. if by misha you meant misha from amherst then youth ultimate is going nowhere since two years ago.

People posting lists need to have a little less bias. #1 is obviously West coast. #2, obviously East. #2 doesn't have a single Seattle player and #1 is Oregon/Seattle heavy. I know people haven't been able to see everyone across the country but maybe you should just post about the people you know and a list or something could be formed.

Anonymous said...

yeah it would suck if there was no diversity on the team and it was all boston/seattle/couple atl.

you cant forget about the whole middle of the country...the midwest perhaps...

Wow, beyond that I think there are a lot of players that will need to show something special at try-outs.

Anonymous said...

Greg is probably the best overall player trying out....he does everything great.....he handles is a fantastic receiver plays great defense, but most of all which I think is most important is greg is a great teammate and leader, something I think will be most important in such a talent heavy year.(Greg would make it on skills alone, he is that good)

Anonymous said...

Could Greg be a starter on a Club National quarterinalist level team? Say Sub-Zero?

If you're answer is "no," he is certainly not the best overall player trying out. The fact is that most of these players are great teammates and leaders (they wouldn't get invited to try-outs otherwise).

North Hills best players (Thorn and Funk) are both small, squirrely handlers with great throws who probably aren't athletic enough to make the team.

Three of us from Longmeadow, Massachusetts are going:

Tommy Li (ATL)
Ryan Rzepka (Seattle)
AJ Hutchins (Seattle)

We've all played at YCC this past year- Tommy and Ryan with Buda Open, and AJ with Mixed. We are the only three who sent in applications- supporting the theory that YCC players have a better chance of being invited.

The Pulse said...

Honestly, looking at the lists it might just be that there were not that many applicants this year.

Anonymous said...

thats incorrect. there were about the same this year than 2 years ago.

Anonymous said...

YCC was used for scouting, but there was definitely no "lock" on tryout positions for those that attended. Also, not having attended doesnt necessarily mean that your chances are diminished per say - you just have to make it up in other areas, and show that you've been productive. I know one kid on the list who hasnt played YCC or Westerns/Easterns.

Of course, I'm not on the selection committee, so this is all just speculation. Honestly, narrowing down for tryout positions must have been very tough. It's gonna be even harder to get down to 20. At some point it might be akin to applying to a highly selective school - many kids have strong backgrounds, in the end its a coin toss of who gets in and who doesnt.
Just my thoughts.

Gregs recommendation was written by a guy name Charlie Reznikoff....who happens to be a captain of a little team we call sub-zero out in Minnesnowta

Anonymous said...

John C. McGinley will not be attending tryouts...opting to play at stanford invite instead.

Anonymous said...

Good for Greg. I am sure there are plenty of players who have good players write recommendations for them.

There are at least two guys trying out (Stubbs and Lindsley) who start for a team that beat Charlie's team at Nationals. I guess they could have written a recs for each other.

Anonymous said...

you guys all do know that stubbs tore his acl, right? and greg arenson and sam brickwedde are the best high school players in the midwest so i see no reason why they would not make it.

Before the playultimate.com rumor mill grinds out another gem of a rumor, let me clear up this George Stubbs thing - apparently he tore his PCL at an indoor practice (yes this is rare and very difficult to do apparently). Another reason that college Freshmen may turn down try-outs for tournaments is that the team takes a relatively small proportion of college Freshmen, so it may be more valuable to get in a strong weekend of Ultimate with your team than with the try-out crew, if that's all it will amount to.

Lauren Baecher (is she trying out?)
Fiona McKibben (eligible, but trying out?)
Maggie Fisher
Bailey Zahniser (sp?)
Elise Rasmussen
Kimber Coles
Claire Neyman
Lucy Wolf

I know, it's pretty handler heavy... I don't know as many cutter types. Either way, there's some f-ing talent on this list. Wish I could be there :(
