Anybody got scores from Fall Brawl?

Pennsbury and CHS kicked butt once again in pool play. CHS posted pretty impressive scores with out Zander, and pennsbury looks like the picked up where they left off last year lead by Issac.

Needham looked awful getting two shut outs against them one by John Jay the other by pennsbury.

JV div CHS B beat Pennsbury B in the finals to win JV.

are those scores up legit..?

I'd be really suprised if they were- beacon only lost by like 5 last time the 2 teams met up (last weekend) and I don't think Needham could get shut out like that. It looks more like someone wanted to post fake results. But, I guess you never know....

scores arent fake, check the UPA score reporter.

yeah I checked them, but I've seen people in the past put up fake scores. Its not like its hard to do, you just do it the way anyone would.

Alameda played at Santa Clara in a college tournament this weekend, giving a UC-Davis splitsquad team a little bit of a hard time, losing 12-8 or 12-7. They also lost to Stanford Y 13-2 and played at least two more games.

According to score reporter, ARHS rolled through Saturday's pool play at the Pat Bell Classic over some college teams.

any updates from fall brawl?

Columbia beat pennsbury in the finals

Anonymous said...

what was the score........and did Columbia really win without Zander

Anonymous said...

zander played..

15-10, a lot closer than that though, every point was pretty hard fought and filled with turns. this will be another year where they play each other 30 times and split games.

remember needham graduated 13 players from last year, its legit

Needham was also missing players...
a captain and a few other starters

Anonymous said...

wow, thats incredible. Did I read somewhere that Needham also lost their coach too?

this is the year of NYC schools, I can feel it.

It hasn't been the year of NYC schools since like 1994. That was the last year Bronx Science (Green Grass and Shade) rolled through the Amherst Invitational. It was Science's third and last Invite title.

Scarsdale (NY) made the Amherst Invite finals with some dude called Fortunat Mueller (and his less famous twin, Mattias) in 1995.

Brooklyn Tech was up on Amherst 14-10 in the inaugaral UPA HS Nationals in 1998. ARHS scored six straight to take the first UPA HS National title.

Since then, New York City (and all five boroughs and beyond) have been quiet. Beacon has had some modest success with on and off years. Fieldston is attending tournaments and winning some games. The Stuyvesant girls are strong. Scarsdale still shows how a team can play with intensity and spirit (amazing to think that NYNY legend Jon Gewirtz helped to start that team). Bronx Science is back but still light-years away from its original championship form. John Jay is rising - having hosted its own Invite back in early October and making a semis appearance at the recent Pennsbury Fall Brawl.

Is it NYC's year? No. But it is definitely an up year for them.

All the scores are true. Columbia and Pennsbury did have a very close game, but Columbia pulled it through despite the many turn overs by their main handlers.

Stars of the finals:

Beaches- makes a come back in pennsbury uniform and plays big.

Issac- Main thrower and leader of the team.

Number 3 African American - On chs D after D by this kid.

Number 13- On chs handler nice throws and great handler cuts.

Zander was not playing on saturday but came back on sunday full force.

John Jay looked very athletic and ran a tough zone, could be great by spring time.

I think both Beacon and John Jay will do very well this season. I believe that Beacon didn't bring their whole team to this tournament, but look at kitkat or whatever that tournament is called and you'll see a strong showing.

Also, both of these teams are 99% seniors, and both want to go to Easterns.

Stuy also every season looks good by the end- they have a great coach and are very dedicated to practice.

Fieldton lost a bunch of seniors, but they are starting (with full school funding) BOTH a girls team and a middle school team.

John Jay, Beacon, Stuy and Fieldston... no other NY team need be mentioned. Scarsdale is down and out, the present day form of Bronx Sci is not even a shadow of what they used to be. This is the first time Bard went to a tournament, but they have a long long way to go; but its a good start.

Also, fun aside: Fieldstons new coach used to coach Scarsdale.

Who is Fieldstons new coach? Who coaches Sty? Does anyone coach CHS or Pennsbury or are they all student run?

How many juniors teams out there have coaches now? This is something interesting are the top teams all coached or do most of them have just a bunch of students running the show?

The Pulse said...

Anthony Nunez has been coaching CHS for at least the past 6 years. Pennsbury was coached by Bill Kieffer last year, but not this year.

#3 from Columbia is Jordan Taylor (jr), #13 is Josh Cincotta (sr).

Most top teams have a coach - it's pretty hard to make the jump to becoming an elite, traveling team without one.

"Issac- Main thrower and leader of the team."

Isaac Saul is only a junior, succeeding his brother Noah (recent grad and now playing at UNC).

Isaac was impressive, single-handledly organizing and running the Fall Brawl event and playing big simultaneously for the Pennsbury Falcons.

Looking forward to the spring's Born to Dive event.

beacon lost to wissahickon 13-12 on universe

is anyone else sick of hearing the lame excuse that so-and-so team was missing players and thats why they lost? every time u play, u represent ur team, win or lose

Anonymous said...

needham is not going to be at the level it was at last year. Thats a fact. They graduated way too much talent to replace in one year. However, they will be better than scores from this weekend represent, and as the new players get more experience, the team will improve drastically.

any of those highlighted kids trying out for worlds?

Anonymous said...

Beaches and Isaac are. Don't know about the Columbia kids.

Born to Dive will be sweet, and organized in the Winter.. HOPEFULLY played at our High School fields, but that will take a lot of work on our Athletic Director. Thanks for everyone who came out to Fall Brawl, I know I had a lot of fun and CHS played well and deserved the first place trophy. I can't wait to see them and North Hills at VA this weekend.

what has happened to all the good teams in nj? are watchung and chs were the only legit teams? what happened to princeton?

Anonymous said...

JP stevens and princeton both disbanded because of the lack of players and school support. its a damn shame too. much respect to both teams. hopefully they can come back next year.

Anonymous said...

princeton did not disband. they exist, but are very limited. last year was a very senior strong team and the underclassman we did have were not very experienced. they will be around, just not at the level that they have been at for the last 3 years.

Part of the reasons why so many teams come out strong and then fall apart later on in their history is because they lack coaching or having an adult to help keep the team strong for years to come.

The lack of adult supervision/coaching might be because we as an ultimate community never talk about how great some of the coaches really are. Besides Tiina Booth and Michael Baccarini (both high level greats who made a huge impact in the juniors world), we never hear about other good coaches who have helped their teams stay strong for many years.

Examples:

Will Smolinski: Coached YHB the past four years. He has several state championships, a semis apperance at easterns in 2006, a quarters showing in 2007, and could easily be in the final with in the next few years. He has coached several top college players and has made a huge impact on this very large juniors program.

Nick Kaczmarek: Is not only a great coach, but also a very young coach. Nick has helped North Hills go from a team of mostly freshman and sophomores, to a team that will contend to be the best in the east this year. He has taught his (now senior heavy) team the rights and wrongs of great ultimate and how to stay confident in high pressure situations. He has a PA state championship finals apperance (only losing to last years pennsbury team by one) and a Paideia Cup finals showing. If Nick sticks around to coach this team will stay strong for many years.

Anthony Nunez: Is the coach of Columbia High School. We all know the tradition CHS has with this sport, but thanks to Anthony Nunez this team is still going very strong and is always a major contender in the east. Nunez has not only coached CHS to many state championships, but he also has a 2nd place easterns finish under his belt in 2005, a quarters appearence in 2006 (losing only to the pennsbury by 1 point), and a semis showing in 2007 (again losing to pennsbury on double game point). After 2005 many people counted CHS down for the count but because of their strong recruitment, and the coaching of Nunez the team still is a power house.

Luke Johnson: Granted Luke has moved on to Chicago, but his mark is still there in oregon. He has helped shape the teams future and has produced many top players. He has helped lead them to the finals of westerns and even has won state championships with the team.

Mike Mullen: Mike has been the coach of maybe the most dominate team in the west coast. He has a 2nd place finish to Amherst in the last juniors nationals in 2004, he has won every westerns since 2005, and he has a YCC championship this year with the seattle team. He has two players from the last worlds, and he coached Chase SB himself.

So to be frank we need to start talking up teams, players, and coaches on this blog and give everyone the credit they deserve.
