Churchill Westerns 2007 Film

Westerns Journey 2007 - web version - 250MB
Westerns Journey 2007 - itunes version - 250MB
Westerns Journey 2007 - google version

Dylan Freechild (#45 - Fr.) and Kimber Coles (#5 - Jr.) did all the editing and production with post-production help from myself and Andrew Sheridan (#21 - Sr.). The video took more than 4 weeks to finish with work on it taking place every day since Westerns was over back in mid-May. We will miss Dylan if he leaves Churchill for South Eugene this coming year, but they could use someone with his both his ultimate and editing talents...

As of 06.18 - the film was updated with more footage and a few other corrections...

Well talking about highschool ultimate....who does everyone think will be the best in the west and who will be the beast in the east?

Anonymous said...

West:
Churchill and Northwest will be the main contenders. Just because they always are. I don't know much about the west...so maybe someone from the west would be better.

East:
The east is going to be a throw up. Paideia, Amherst, North Hills, even Columbia are going to be the teams to beat...potential Paidea Cup match up? Amherst is losing a few, but they always have kids to bring up. They'll need to stay consistent. Paideia is losing 7 seniors (I think...) but they should be fine enxt year. They have 8 or 9 seniors (rising), so they should be okay. They'll defenently be able to contend. North Hills, will be THE team to beat just because they're returning everybody. The year after next might be the end for Noth Hills b/c they have about 16 rising seniors. They lost to Paidea in the championship of the Pi Cup. I've heard rumblings that Paideia could be decent, but they choked at both the Paideia Cup, and the Amherst Invite. We'll see...shall we?

In the west the top teams should be Lakeside- I think they have the exact same team.
Seattle Academy- Same Reason
Hopkins- super athletic but super you last year..maybe lose 3 important seniors every other position i guess was filled by sophomores and juniors.
Cathedral- from Minnesota ...Erik Johnson their star sophomore i beleive is still in the mix for Sub Zero tryouts

I have a feeling some new unheard of team is going to make some noise next year like Princeton and wissahickon did in 06. Perhaps Watchung Hills, LC Bird, Woodside, or maybe even ST. Joes prep will step up to the plate.

Churchill spikes wayyyy to much

Anonymous said...

If I'm not mistaken, the semifinal against South Eugene was decided to be "all-spikes", considering the two teams play eachother all the time in their league.

Anonymous said...

I would like to know why the person above accused Churchill of creating too much hype about themselves. We don't create hype. And the spiking was in the semi's vs South and it was a mutual thing between the teams. We are hometown rivals who know each other well and it was agreed upon before the game that we could spike.

Next year? Look for a battle between North Hills, Columbia, Paideia, NMH, and Amherst.

Anonymous said...

Watching the Semi verse Churchill and South I think that the spiking pumped up both teams to make the semi a more intense game....and if it was in good spirit as D force says then it is a good example of spirit of the game.

wow so i would just like to be the first to say "who freaking cares about easterns ultimate?" all this watchung hills, Columbia, pennsbury, stuff is freaking hilarious. Paideia owned everyone on the east coast like they were dead babies this year and yet the east coast chumps still tried to talk about themselves. Easterns needs to realize that nobody really cares about them and realize that whoever wins westerns will always be better than whoever wins easterns. west of the Mississippi is bigger and better than the east. if it takes you 13 states to make a coastline your doing something wrong.

Anonymous said...

now you're just ASKING for trash talk

Anonymous said...

there's nothing wrong with creating hype for your team through highlight reels and whatever.

churchill doesn't hype themselves up too much, because they're a great team and they deserve it. one of the teams that hypes themselves up too much in my opinion is st. johnsbury.
just my opinion.

and as for the east, columbia is going to peak next year. pennsbury is losing a number of seniors but will still remain strong. amherst will pull through like it has in the past couple of years. a HUGE number of Needham's players are seniors, so its hard to say what will happen next year for them, and North Hills is going to own just as much as this year.

I expect that teams to be reckoned with next year might just be Longmeadow and YHB.

I'm probably missing something.

Anonymous said...

so who will be the best on their side of the missisippi?

Anonymous said...

who cares...they ont care about anyone but themsleves apparently..

Anonymous said...

yah seriousley its lame if you post on promoting your own team....its like writing about a good play you had that noone else saw

Anonymous said...

you obviously cant say west coast ultimate is better then east coast ultimate in high school, they never play, and we've already had the arguments about paideia and northwest, but after that east is just as deep as west, dont be ridiculous. AND, people aren't talking about this year, were talking about next year... so this "Paideia owned everyone on the east coast like they were dead babies this year and yet the east coast chumps still tried to talk about themselves." is not really relevant. are you done being an ass hole yet?

Anonymous 4:45 am said... "west of the Mississippi is bigger and better than the east."

First off, you can't make much of an argument for the west being better than the east after the northwest school has won westerns three times in a row. If the west is so much bigger and better, where's northwest's competition? I'm not saying the east is much better, as it seems each coast had one very dominant team. However, making a case for the west being so much better and bigger is ridiculous. The most points put up on northwest school was 9, which was not much better than the east did on paideia.

As far as next year goes, Northwest school seems to have a very strong program and should remain near the top. Seattle Academy had an impressive run at westerns and hopkins should be back after a down year. In the east, pennsbury lost all but 5 players and the same thing happened to needham. Columbia, Amherst, Paideia, and North Hills will be at the top. Some surprise teams to look out for are lc bird and longmeadow

Great video ... I didn't have any problem with the spikes - if anything, they lacked a little originality/flair. What are city rivals for if you can't break out something spectacular?

I was intrigued by the stats at the end - any chance they're available somewhere with a little explanation? They flashed by a little quickly.

Anonymous said...

As a response to "where's Northwest's competition":
Hale's scores against Northwest this season:
7-13 (westerns)
9-13 (league play)
8-10 (states)

And saying that northwest's dominance over most teams in the west is only a sign of "lack of competition" and not of their amazing talent doesn't exactly make a lot of sense. teams from the NW are obviously no pushovers, seeing how they all did at westerns (hale, lakeside, saas)it's just that Northwest makes a lot of teams look worse than they are...

The stats represent the whole tournament. So if it shows 10 goals, then the player scored 10 goals during the tournament. The number after a / represents a layout. Most of the stuff is straight forward. This is really just for our team to see how individuals did or what we need to improve on as a team. We don't use them much, mainly to see the number of drops and throw-aways. Then the fantasy score is just a little thing we added for fun by assigning positive and negative values to different stats.

A little more information on the stats that show up on the end of the video (for those that care):

As Daniel stated above, they really are not used that much and are pretty straight forward. The things that we keep track of are figured out post-game when we review the footage since there are 9 Positive & 9 Negative individual stats kept on each player.

The ones that might be a bit confusing are:
1) any # after a "/" indicates it was a layout of that kind
2) "Hucks" are only given if it is completed and if it is more than 35 yards (something that sometimes is hard to judge).
3) "D's" refer to the number of times a player was responsible for making a D (or happened to get thrown to by the opposing team)
4) "D'd" is just like above and sometimes is a difficult one to determine the fault of.
5) "Touches Allowed" refers to the number of times one of our players lets someone get a touch on the live side.
6) Fantasy Score refers to the calculation of adding up the 9 Positive stats against the 9 Negative. Each stat is worth something different on a sliding scale that a few of the 2005 graduates helped us develop:
Assist = +1
Goal = +1 (layout = +2)
Huck = +.2
Callahan = +3
Touch = +.1 (layout = +.5)
Hand-B = +1
Foot-B = +1
Stalls = +1
D = +1 (layout = +2.5)
ThrowAway = -1
Dropped Disc = -1
Foot Blocked = -1
Hand Blocked = -1
Stalled = -1
Touch Against = -.1
Break Allowed = -.25

just for those that are curious... In the 3 days that this video has been public to download/stream, my webserver has pushed over 62GB of data... In other words, this has been downloaded close to 250 times

(and within a day I will have exceeded my bandwidth allowance... oh, well, we'll see what happens)

thought the video was awesome! watched it on the flight back from california on my brother's ipod.

definitely jealous of the professional level of play and editing.

i was looking at the teams (northwest and padeia) and it looks like paidea performed better against college teams. I dont really know what this means but thought it should be throw n aout there. Also though hte movie's graphics were excellemt.

Anonymous said...

please!!! dont get into this again!!!
paidea is sick. nws is sick. we all want to know what will happen. but there is no way to know or compare.

and this thread has nothing to do with paidea. its about westerns.

I agree with the above comment.

Consensus: They are both amazing.

Hey Luke, if you're running low on bandwidth, I'd be willing to host the video on my site, www.discvideos.com.

I've been busy and haven't done much video stuff since last summer, so there's plenty of space and bandwidth availible.

Shoot me an email if this is something you'd like to do. You can find my email on the website.

Very nice job on the video by the way.

This is a cool video. More teams need to start doing stuff like this. Although I could see the difficult aspects of trying to edit like this.

Hey yall,

if anybody would like to see Northwest's highlight video from this year it is on google video. the link is: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6496476147420839491&q=northwest+ultimate+school+boys&total=9&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=0\

im quite proud of it, and it shows a lot of the kind of intensity we played with all year.

Northwest needs to spike more. Other than that they're pretty good.

Any chance we could download this at a higher quality at some point? Sweet video, thanks for sharing it.

Anonymous said...

I realize now that you can't copy the link because it runs off of the side. so just search in google video, "Northwest School 07 Boys Ultimate"

and we know we don't spike the disc, and we will continue not to.

damn, northwest has got a fucking squad. not just their seniors and the "five", but they got some pretty nasty sophomores and freshman. I still expect them to lose quite a bit this next year, but i think they will continue to be a force. and churchill is just a team of d bags but their play is okay.

Anonymous said...

That post was pretty dumb. The one right above me.

Anonymous said...

You can't say Churchill is a bunch of d bags. Their players aren't at all like that. They are a chill team, you obviously don't really know them.

Anonymous said...

I agree, but i think that churchill gets there not so great reputation because of luke. who i think is a tool.

Anonymous said...

oh snap

DFREE said...

churchill players are actually pretty spirited and fun to play with. i havnt seen much of a problem this year. i think teams that we played would agree. we get our bad reputation from the 2005 westerns and luke was barely part of that team. if anything luke has made churchill ultimate better spirtited and a very talented team.

obviously you would feel that way because you were apart of the team. but as an outsider, most people didn't really want you to win westerns because nobody liked you, and like me, most people wanted northwest to win because not only are they amazing players but there nice guys.
but i appreciate the effort on churchill's part to improve their spirit.

Anonymous said...

k obviously you don't know luke johnson. he has nothing to do with what some call churchills "bad spirit". he opposes spiking abd doesnt really like it when our team does it. And to say that no one likes us is kind of a dumb statement. Mabey some teams were just mad because of the old Chuchill Westerns team in 2005 who were extremely unspirited. get to know luke and the actuall team, then i might think you actually have some logic to your post.
