Delaware just beat #2 Florida 15-13. WOW

but then they lost 15-3 to Oregon and ended up coming in forth in their pool. So they are out of it. And Florida ended up coming in first for the pool anyway. So unfortunately, even though it is sweet to see Florida lose, it means nothing in the tournament.

"I predict columbia winning
princeton coming in second
JP stevens in third
Watchung FoUrth"

which is exactly how it was seeded, what a coincidence.

i want to see JPS pull off something big. they've been super strong this year.

Columbia is obviously going to own.

expecting watchung to upset jps for third.

So what happened on the first day of NJ states?

results went down like this:

columbia - 1st
princeotn- 2nd
watchung- 3rd
JPS- 4th

the 3/4th place consolation game between watchung and JPS went to universe point.

I believe Watchung put up the most points against CHS with 7, Princeton with 6. Columbia was solid, deep into their roster, and played a great tournament. Congratulations to all the teams who competed.

Congratulations especially to Watchung Varsity and Watchung JV, who tied to win Best Spirit.

I just hope that New Jersey ultimate becomes deeper, with more good teams. Cause although the games with the best teams were good, and the games between the worst teams were good, the good teams are far more superior to the bad teams. I hope the gap shortens so that it's not so predicatable and closer overall.

CHS B and Watchung B both made it to prequarters. Says something about NJ ultimate

gapoole said...

Yes it does. It says there aren't that many teams in NJ. There were 11 schools represented, and two of them were first-year teams. There was another school who registered but couldn't come, and that's why Watchung JV made pre-quarters, because Middletown forfeited all their games.

Unfortunately, it looks like at least one team, JP Stevens, will disband before next year, since 7 of their 9 players are graduating and they have no support from their school. They were an excellent team, and I am sorry to see them go. I, too, hope that the NJHSU gets deeper and stronger in the future.

That presents us with an interesting discussion for a thread. What could be done to improve the level of play for the NJHSU league? Any thoughts?

Council Rock South wins their first ever PHUEL City Championship today in Perkiomen Valley -- over "Pennsbury" on universe point in the finals.
It's in quotes because none of Pennsbury's seniors came -- this is the Pennsbury team we'll see next year, and they already looked amazing.

JPS gave us their tent; I'm sad to see them go

Are they definitly going to disband? why don't the two guys who remain recruit frosh and start from scratch.

Pennsbury was represented by three of their 5 returning A-team players, and had the JV captain and some other solid JV players missing, playing only with 10 players. A great showing by CR though, they were down big at half and stayed with it.

jp stevens is a great team, its just that their school doesnt hold them in such high regards. people in their school dont respect them at all, but i think that goes for most teams.

I have to give them credit for pretty much playing savage all of states.

Princeton is like JP. There will be 3-4 (depending on who you count) returning players. The school gives no help at all. But last year we had only 4 players returning and were able to recruit many of our athletic friends to play. So it is possible to keep it going, but it's hard. It takes a lot of persuading and time to make the new team and teach them. Although Princeton isn't returning a lot, I believe (and hope) that the team will continue. Hopefully the same will happen with JP.

Columbia won the whole thing (again) and it seems like their coach Nunez has them running like a well oiled machine. Impressive that they could be so strong for so many years.

I feel part of the problem that New Jersey has very few teams with coaches. Columbia has Nunez (and no school support), Watchung has Mike Porter(with school support), Ridgewood has their coach(with school support) and these teams come out every year with large amounts of players. Can other teams find coaches/people interested in helping their team out?

Support from the school is really helpful. I think Columbia's dominance allows them to draw a lot of players each year, plus they have a coach for their A team, B team, AND their girls team (Sparkle Motion). Mike Porter handles Watchung varsity and JV by himself with only one field, but "varsity" status and benefits help in various ways: paid transportation, funds for tournament fees, exemption from gym, etc help to recruit and retain players.

Westfield showed up with a coach this year. Who else will in the future?

Watchung Hills gave Columbia a good run for their money in the first half, but the intesity died down in the second and CHS easily took the game 15-7. Still a great game though, and there is no doubt that CHS is one of the greatest teams in the East.

CHS is a well coached, well run, athletic team that looks to be solid for many many years. Next year I am hopping on the CHS/North Hills train!

Dont forget about Paideia and Pennsbury, although they are both losing star power, and lots of it, they both have JV programs and very good returning players.. Oh and that team, uhh, Amherst?

Anonymous said...

How about YHB? Ultimate is their only school sponsored sport.

Pennsbury is done for awhile, they wont be at the same caliber they were at this year for a while. Paidea 'herst are always strong, i mean Amherst lost 6?(correct me if im wrong) star players, most played on USA, and still made it to the finals. Tiina deserves the credit she gets
