Open Thread: When does your team start practice?

Anyone care to chat? Ground might not start to thaw in most of the country for a few more weeks (unless you live in some of the areas where it never froze to begin with), many athletes are in mid-season for their winter sports, so when does your team start practicing as a team for the spring season?

Do you jump right into it picking up where the fall left off? Or is there a gentle transition from an "off-season" to full-blown practices? Are recruitment efforts as excited as they were in the fall?

(If this topic doesn't suit your fancy feel free to talk about whatever you want)

Monday March 19th is the magic day for us. That's the day the varsity spring season starts -- We're not allowed to practice before then. Kids are out on their own training all winter -- I just can't start the season until that day.

For us the first day we can practice is February 28th which coincides with the beginning of all spring sports at our school. Currently we have a good deal of ultimate players involved in basketball or the winter musical.

Churchill HS (and South Eugene) haven't really stopped since the fall.

We officially kick-off our CHS Spring Season in two weeks. Our first tournament will hopefully be the Stanford Qualifier on February 24/25.

For those of you alluding to some rule that PREVENTS you from starting before a certain date . . . who is making this rule? Who's rule is it?

For me and Tiina it's the governing bodies of varsity sports in our states. In Vermont it's the Vermont Principals' Association (VPA) and for her it's the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA).

Up here in St. Johnsbury we're in the athletic program which means that even though Ultimate is not a part of the VPA, the school makes us abide by (almost) all of their rules. I'd imagine it's a similar situation for Tiina and Mike?

Yep, as a varsity sport we abide by the same rules as other varsity sports at our school which includes no poaching on another team's season.

I am big fan of people playing multiple sports during the year and not focusing just on ultimate. Plus we are a small school and we need our athletes playing all three seasons if we want to be able to compete.

last year we started practice around beginning of January. Nothing feels better than after box of death drill for a month and a half in freezing weather and then scrimmaging in warmer weather. The feeling your hands get when it thaws outside is unbelieveable, it feels incredibly good. It also makes everyone a lot more dedicated. This year were starting later due to most players graduating and not really having enough players for a team yet. Perhaps in a couple weeks we'll put one together.

At LC Bird a student is allowed to play on a varsity sports team and participate in an athletic club at the same time?

I would just like to say that although practices don't start for me for another month, i am stoked. Extremely so. I is going to be a good year, hopefully with some wicked ultimate comeing out of the highschools around the nation. Best of luck to all.
As a questions, and to maybe start a little talk (although the small number of posts make it doubtful) WHO IS GOING TO BE THE BEST. Or at least very good?
