the tidewater tune-up is going to be a great show.

you've got the best from philly, you've got the top from pittsburgh, you've got all the best from virginia. all of the best teams from three different backgrounds in one early season tournament, this bodes very well for the future of the sport.

and it is going to make for a very interesting spring (and rest of fall for that matter) season.

cant wait to hear results.

and kudos to prep for getting the first seed at phall cities, or in other words #2 in phuel (after pennsbury) if only they would report some scores to the upa score reporter....

good luck guys!

Churchill Varsity went 5-0, beating South Eugene in the showcase game, 10-8.

It was a sweet showcase game that was tied at 8-8 with the sun setting. Churchill simply wanted it more and played nearly perfect the last two points. John Bloch sat out the final point... not sure why...

As for the other scores, the UPA score reporter has been updated:

The Dactlys win Phall PHUEL. A Pennsbury team owning PHUEL?? WHAT A SURPRISE!

anyone have details (or scores) from the pool play for any of these tournaments

[begin diatribe]
some of them have a few scores, but for the love of pete teams, report your scores.

its real easy, just go to your team site and click the "report score" link at the bottom of the page for individual games.

for tournaments just click on the dash (-) in the table and report the score for the given game.

realll easy, really quick to do, and it gives everyone a better idea of how your team performs etc.

[diatribe over]

Tidewater Tune-up:

Nick Kaczmarek, coach of North Hills, said that the boys went 3-1 on Saturday defeating Woodside JV (13-0) and Mount Lebanon (13-3), Godwin (13-2). As was said earlier, North Hills did lose 13-8 to Pennsbury.

They enter the quarterfinals as the number two seed.

The thing that really stands out to me is the win against Mt. Lebanon in what was basically a rematch of PHUL finals last season. According to Kaczmarek, North Hills showed up to play "a complete game from beginning to end."

North Hills hopes to see Pennsburty again in finals.

Aside from the North Hills game, I do not have any updates from the Mt. Lebanon team.

Just a quick update after checking score reporter:

Mt. Lebanon went 3-1 as well on Saturday losing to North Hills and defeating Godwin (13-3) and Woodside JV (13-2). They also beat LC Bird (12-8) in the crossover game. They are to play HB Woodlawn (Yorktown) Sunday in quarterfinals.

North Hills will play Cardinal Gibbons in the quarterfinals.

Not that I'm saying it will happen, but that it is possible for Mt. Lebanon and North Hills to rematch in finals. But in order to do so, the very highly anticipated (refer to Fall PHUL 2006 article) Mt. Lebanon vs. Pennsbury game must be played in semi-finals.

Looks like good competition all around and a great way to cap off the fall season.

Good luck to all teams on Sunday.

Alright, well, Wissahickon dropped out of the PHUEL tournament, so Cardinal O'Hara split into an A and B team, with the A team taking Wissahickon's spot, and their B staying in O'Hara's first spot, which definitely unbalanced the pools even more. Either way, Cheltenham came out on top of a close fight in the A pool, and the Pterodactyls managed their pool, with Council Rock South definitely looking stronger than last year, and rolled to a victory in the finals over Cheltenham.

Maybe our picture of PHUEL isn't that much clearer, but it looks like Pennsbury really will have a good shot at giving a strong 1-2 punch, even if one of them doesn't want to be called Pennsbury.

The Tidewater Tuneup was the first tournament for many teams including Godwin and Grafton who played pretty well for their first ever games. They both defeated Woodside JV and Yorktown JV...two teams with great spirit and sportsmanship. Godwin played Mount Lebanon in the first game and lost 13-3. And in the third game Godwin lost 13-3 in an intense game against North Hills...who didn't have as good sportsmanship as the other two teams in the pool. I watched this game and North Hills seemed to contest every point Godwin scored and would make them bring the disc back. It was a shame to seem a good team take advantage of a new one. At one point one player from the North Hills team scored and proceeded to throw a disc at a Godwin player's face, took off his shirt and ran around the field. It was an unfortunate experience for the new Godwin team, but luckily the North Hills coach seemed to calm down his players. Overall Godwin and Grafton had good showings...Godwin going 4-3 and Grafton going 3-4 and it was a good "tuneup" for all the teams in it.

Since none of the North Hills players will post here, I feel the need to defend the team on specific aspects of the previous post.

I want to begin by stating that it is not unsportsmanlike or unspirited to play by the rules. All calls made by the North Hills players were correct - the two goals called back, in particular, were because a player caught it in the endzone, did not return to the line, and threw to a teammate from within the endzone. Travels were called and our players on the field attempted to explain the calls - which I can understand would be frustrating to a new team that didn't understand why their goals were called back.

After one such frustrating point, North Hills was on offense and scored on a huck. A defender from Godwin attempted to tackle our player from behind as he caught the goal. Our player responded with the spike mentioned in the above post. Afterwards I talked to him about controlling his emotions in spite of the dangerously, intentional foul (and I honestly cannot think of another way to describe it). We also called a timeout to discuss the issues at hand and cleaned up the game.

I apologize for our team's conduct during that point, but I will not apologize for our team playing by the rules. The players on North Hills are truly good sportsmen that put everything into their team.

Sadly, I've seen a number of issues like this arise because teams do not know the rules. I would suggest that all new teams try to read the rules or play scrimmage games before competing in higher level tournaments.

edit: caught the disc outside the endzone or on the line, then ran in and did not return.

There's no RULES man, this is FRISBEE! Take those cleats off and smoke a bowl this minute! Now where did those dogs run off to...

Hey I'm Austin and I'm the Captain of the Godwin team. First, I just want to say congratulations to North Hills on second place in the tournament. Now, the game between us and you guys was definately ugly. I first want to say that I read the rules to all my guys, and I can understand it's easy not to believe us because we are new, but you were new once too. We also went over them the day before so it wasn't an issue of us not knowing or remembering the rules. Also, with all due respect Nick, there's no way you could know if all of the calls your guys made were correct because you were not on the field. I was on the field for the majority of the game and I noticed fast counts (your players did not say "stall" or "stalling" in between each number and our guys probably had about 6 seconds instead of ten.) Another thing I saw countless times is the issue of Godwin scoring and then someone from North Hills saying we were on the line. It seemed to happen a lot. And as a result Godwin would have to take it back, allowing North Hills' defense to get set. I'm not saying they were wrong or they were right, but I've never played a frisbee game in which every point was contested. And it was frustrating but it wasn't because we didn't understand it was because we felt it was unfair and uneccesary.

Now onto the big issue. First of all, I talked to the player on my team who got the frisbee thrown at him. I told him to be completely honest and he told me that he did not tackle your player but said he was going for the disc. A tackle is when someone deliberately runs into someone and knocks them down. What my player did was accidental and should in no way be classified as a "tackle." I understand why your player got angry but I've never seen someone do something so dangerous in a sports game before. And trust me it wasn't a spike because my player had to dodge the disc that was thrown at his face and listen to your player who cursed at him. If you noticed I kept my player out for the remainder game because I didn't want it to get uglier but he could have really been hurt. I do appreciate you calming your guys down, and besides the fast counts, your guys did take it easy for the rest of the game. I also appreciate the apology too and I know that that was probably not a good representation of how your team plays.

Thanks for the clarifications Austin and you're right, I was not on the field and could not have known about all the calls (I just was speaking about the ones I knew of).

As for the tackle-spike issue, I in no way meant to suggest that your player deliberately attempted to hurt our player, however, even in an attempt at defense, going through a player in that way is very dangerous.

I've spoken to our player and he acknowledges that he didn't control his emotions. He felt as though the player was trying to tackle him and didn't stop to think about the likely situation.

None of this excuses our conduct on that point, however, and again, I want to apologize to your team. I would like to say that our player definitely did not mean for the spike to be at your player. It may have appeared that way, but he assured me that he never meant for it to be at him.

As far as stalling is concerned, a player need only say stalling and then count from 1 to 10. Stall does not need to be said between each number.

Nick Kaczmarek said...

BTW, I think we've discussed this enough here. If we need to continue this further, it should be done between the two teams. You can e-mail at me nik17@pitt.edu.

No, I agree. Only thing is the rules...we read the tournament ones which must have been more specific or different or something. But whatever, it's over. I apologize for any trouble my team might have caused your's and good luck in the future.

Nick Kaczmarek said...

No trouble caused, just an unfortunate situation. Good luck with your season.

not gonna lie, north hills can be a bunch of little unspirited brats. they're good, but they're dicks.

b. "All stall counts, whether initiated, re-initiated or resumed, must start with the word 'stalling'"

I think this is where we misinterpreted the rule. There were still fast counts on North Hills, but we were also saying to say "stall" in between to prevent North Hills from fast counting. My bad.

And thanks for the compliment Julian. We worked hard to learn competitive frisbee as opposed to the pick up we played last year. And it's not easy being uncoached. So I appreciate the comment. Were you on one of the teams there?

Great show by all rookie teams at tidewater tune-up. The only game my team played which I havent seen posted was Lebo v. Pennsbury game in semi-finals.

Great intense game in really crappy conditions. lebo started up 3-1, but Pennsbury took half at 8-6 by scoring some incredible upwind points. Soft cap went on at around 10-7? game to 12. Pennsbury took the win at 12-8.

all stall must begin with "stalling" but also the space between "stalling" and "One" must be a full second, otherwise the count is only 9 seconds. Rarely does this take place and most often stall counts are 9 seconds or less...

Maybe youre just mad because North Hills is a better team then you or something, but for whatever reason you should never go on blogspot and give another team a bad rep. I played against North Hills at Tidewater tune-up, and they are the best team from Pittsburg right now, and we got along really well with them, and they didnt make any unspirited calls or anything, so maybe your just another player who doesnt understand the rules?

Hey, I just want to clarify something. I asked everyone on my team and I want North Hills to know that Godwin had nothing to do with that comment about you guys
