HS Spring Tournaments Poll

So, I'm not sure how excited you are for the spring season as it is only just about to turn to December, but I'm curious what tournament people are most looking forward to come this spring.

The following 2 polls have been compiled by taking what the UPA Score Reporter and UPA Tournament listing currently has scheduled for the upcoming season. Only solid dated tournaments are listed in the below polls.

Vote for the tournament you or your team is most looking forward to attending or would attend if had the chance.

spring reign is the biggest tournament on the coast. maybe the country. the others dont even compare...

what about paideia cup?!?! thats in april, and you will have Amherst, Paideia, maybe Hopkins, and Pennsbury and Columbia. That has to be one of the most anticipated tournys of the spring, probably more competetive than Easterns

key word: coast.

someone should really host a tournament were the east coast teams can play the west coast teams.

keep it tuned to play ultimate. no promises, just ideas at the moment, but ideas with capabilities....

we'll see where it goes...

oh la la vagueness

i suppose you would have to host a tournament somewhere in the midwest then, to allow similar travelling situations for each team. im sure if a team from the east coast wanted to come, theyd be more than welcome.

a tournament like this is much needed... how else would seattle get to prove is dominance over the east coast?

Before this thread gets too out of control, I have to say that Amherst is NOT going to any other faraway tournaments in 2007 other than the Paideia Cup and Easterns. I have just figured out that it will cost us close to $1000/player for these events, as the Paideia Cup is on the first week of spring break and the airline prices are exorbitant.
We are not a wealthy school and we don't have wealthy players. It is a STRUGGLE each year for us to get to all of our events. One of the reasons that I (along with many others) lobbied for getting rid of Hs Nats was because of the cost.
So when you are looking at the possiblity that a kid might not even try out for varsity because they can't afford to play (they also have to pay $160 to the school as an athletic fee), then this speculation about adding ANOTHER tournament seems surreal.

"i suppose you would have to host a tournament somewhere in the midwest then, to allow similar travelling situations for each team. im sure if a team from the east coast wanted to come, theyd be more than welcome."

Isn't this what YCC is? Again, cost and time are a factor for some of my players, but I think that YCC is supposed to meet that "need."

Or just go to the Denver East Invite. Good competition on good fields in the middle of the country. Awesome.

Hopkins is hoping (and tentatively planning) to attend Paideia Cup again since we heard they were looking to schedule a girls pool. Our ladies took 3rd at westerns last year, graduated 2 and are excited to play the eastern teams to amp up for Westerns.

Also, a great midwest tourney is Madison Mudbath. Look no further if you want to see the top teams from CO, KS, MO, MN, WI, IL, and Winnipeg MB...

It's the week after Paidiea Cup, so if you can't get to that one, definitely look into Mudbath.

Ahem . . . Denver is not in the middle of the country. Not by half--pun fully intended.

Yeah, as far as what Tiina said, i can also testify that Pennsbury's players cannot afford to travel to another far tournament other than Paideia Cup and Easterns. I dont know why Easterns are being held in Ohio this year, but that is definately goind to drain us financially.

Also, it is true that YCC's should be the tournament where the best teams from aroud the country can play each other. My assumption is that this year the Philly team will be mostly Pennsbury players and we would love for Northwest and any other elite west coast high school teams to attend.

By the way, Paideia Cup, while not the biggest tournament taking place, is definately our most anticipated. It was the most fun tournament we went to last year, and may be our only chance to play Paideia this year.

I agree with Tiina 100% here. The Northwest School teams also don't have the time or money to travel to all these tourneys even though there are so many great teams with so many great people that we would like to meet.

The ideal goal for me is not a national championship for HS teams but a well organized HS league in every town. The YCC ties into this and really gives the sport a better chance to grow.

1. Does anyone know if Terminus is a purely high school tournament or if it's one of those college tourneys high school teams can sign up for?(the tourney wasnt listed under youth on the upa website this year)
2. The YHB Invite was created with the idea to have a central East Coast location that teams like Pennsbury, Columbia, etc could come to without traveling very far. We're also hoping to make it a very competitive tournament to kick off the spring season. If any of you havent considered but you would like more information contact ivo_nn@yahoo.com

Hopkins,
you guys have your choice with Westerns and Easterns, right? if so, where you guys thinking this coming year?

Jake said...

I don't think that we actually have a choice. there has been some speculation about that possibility, but we decided to persue attending westerns.

we're hoping to be invited to the Paideia Cup, and then go to the exact opposite side of the 48 to play in westerns. the opportunity to play all the best teams in the country is just too great to turn down.

also, the official dividing line is the Mississippi, and we're on the western side of that. it's Cretin Durham Hall that is (technically and physically) on the the east side. They (and the rest of the St. Paul schools) should be the ones with the choice.

i went to St. Anthony Village High School in Newbrighton, MN and should have remembered where Hopkins is in relation to the sippi...

churchill may rethink both amherst and paideia, but our initial team meetings earlier this fall seemed to place both tourneys outside our financial ability.
