Hip Hop Hooplah

im exausted at the moment (college sectionals today), so im just gonna throw this out there as an open thread, Hip Hop concluded today crowning a new champion - Princeton High School.

a controverial bracket setup set the stage for the number 1 and 2 seeds to play each other in semis - Pennsbury 13 Columbia 14

Columbia then lost 5 to 13 against Princeton, who came out of the other semi over Wissahickon 13-9.

all my info is based on the score reporter website. aight, cats outta the bag, discuss.

I heard that Tim Morrissy was most to blame for CHS' loss to Princeton. If only he were more like his brother.

i dont know how controversial it was, peyote had already played wiss earlier that week, with wiss winning 15-11

Also, it wasn't really a very seeded tournament at all - the emphasis is more on good Ultimate being played than crowning a winner.

Also, in other news, there was a Medford park division organized by teams on the waitlist.
Lower Merion took the division by storm, beating Watchung Hills in the finals by a score of 13-4. A great tournament on great fields with great spirit all around. Hooray Hiphop!

Rumor has it that Columbia went up 5-0 before Princeton answered with a streak of 13.

Consider the rumor mentioned in the previous post confirmed :)

The bracket setup was indeed controversial. Given that wiss played peyote and columbia played princeton, why weren't the semis columbia vs. wiss and princeton vs. peyote?

In regards to the previous post, there were three possible set ups for the semis:
wiss vs. peyote and columbia vs. princeton
wiss vs. princeton and peyote vs. columbia
princeton vs. peyote and columbia vs. wiss

So considering that wiss played peyote and columbia played princeton, the other two options were legitimate.

Here's my two cents on the semifinal matchups since I'm actually the one that created the schedule. Fantusta is partially correct in what he writes about the seeding. In creating the seeding of the top 12 teams I had several goals. These goals were to create fair seeding based on the strength of the teams, to create matchups of teams from different areas that might not play each other so much, and as much as possible to avoid repeat matchups.

With that in mind, I saw that there were 6 teams that will be going to Easterns (Columbia, Princeton, Wiss, Pennsbury,Hampton, and Yorktown). In addition it seemed that some of the other 6 teams were also pretty strong.

I looked at 3 things to try to guess the strength of the teams: their record in the spring, their RRI rating on the UPA site, and the results from the fall Kat in the Hat tourney. I scheduled with the thought that based on all of the info I had Columbia, Princeton, Wiss, and Pennsbury would be the top 4 seeded teams.

I also felt that any of those 4 teams might have a tough game or a loss in their pool, as Princeton almost did, going down 11-7 in a game to 12 against CB East.

Anyway in creating the potential semi matchups (with the assumption of top seeds advancing) there were 3 possibilities

1. Wiss vs Pennsbury and Col. vs Princeton (I decided against this because Wiss and Pennsbury are close geographically and so are Princeton and Columbia. Wissahickon had defeated Pennsbury on the Wednesday before the tounrey)

2. Wiss vs Columbia and Princeton vs Pennsbury (I decided against this because these were the exact matchups from the fall) . In creating the schedules I was cutting and pasting from an old schedule and I did originally accidentally send out this matchup. In my mind, coming into the tournament Columbia had a slight edge over Princeton in terms of argument for who would be seed higher. As for Pennsbury and Wissahickon, Pennsbury had an outstanding fall season, but they had not played many games in the spring. Wissahickon had played a number of games so to me it was not a clear decision as to which team was stronger. They are both taented teams and I regarded them as fairly equal. With all those things in mind, I decided to go with option 3 below.

3. Wiss vs Princeton and Columbia vs Pennsbury

You may or may not agree with the reasoning, but at least now you know the thought that went into the decision. So, call it controversial if you want. However, don't let it overshadow that there are a number of very strong teams and players that gave a great effort on Saturday.
