It wold be cool for east teams to meet west teams at this tournament.

looks like youthultimate.com has the padeia cup teams up.

Anonymous said...

looks like it should be a pretty impressive weekend.

can Paideia win their own tournament again, who are the favorites to win

The Pulse said...

If I were seeding:

1) Paideia
2) Amherst
3) Columbia
4) North Hills
5) Seattle Academy
6) USN
7) Hopkins
8) Heritage

This is based on previous years and fall results. I guarantee it wouldn't hold to seed, and there would be some amazing 1v2 pool play games.

Anonymous said...

It's going to be interesting. Don't know much about Seattle Academy and Hopkins, but North Hills, Columbia, Amherst, and Paideia are all possible Easterns champions. Nashville and Heritage seem like the odd teams out in terms of talent.

"1) Paideia
2) Amherst
3) Columbia
4) North Hills
5) Seattle Academy
6) USN
7) Hopkins
8) Heritage"

I agree with this for the most part. But its not quite cut and dried. Paideia should be first because of its incredible showing last year. Amherst was an Easterns finalist last year, Columbia was a semifinalist, and North Hills a fifth place finisher; those three fall into order behind Paideia. Heritage and Hopkins both seem to be firmly at the bottom of the pack. But Seattle was a fifth place finisher at Westerns. Can we equate this with North Hills fifth place Easterns finish? It gives the tired East vs. West argument new importance. Personally, I'd put Seattle just ahead of North Hills. Seattle beat Hopins 13-8 at Westerns last year while North Hills beat Hopkins only 15-11 at Paideia.

Anonymous said...

Going by the last 2 years at the cup, Hopkins was 2nd and 8th. Wouldn't that make for an average of a 5-6 seed?

Anonymous said...

Last year Hopkins took half against every single team except for Paideia. It wasn't like hopkins was a team that teams could just walk all over teams had to play hard to come back from being down

Anonymous said...

In a tournament like this seeding really doesnt matter. If you win every game it doesnt matter what seed you are. Paideia was the number 3 seed going into the tournament and won without any real challenge. Whatever it should be a fun tournament, but this is not supposed to be about Paideia, it is supposed to be about the hustle.......but if the big bad east is scared to play the young guns then no biggy.

Mikey K said...

all you big time eastern schools, show the midwest and west what you got at the Hopkins Hustle. East vs West? North vs South? US vs Canada?

the Hustle promises to be one of the top youth tourneys in the country this year. come out to Maple Plain and let's play some disc...

Anonymous said...

why did paideia schedule their cup for the same weekend as the ACT? AGAIN?

Anonymous said...

They hate standardized tests.

Anonymous said...

The weekend for this year's Paideia Cup was not chosen by us... it was chosen by our school's calendar and administration. Our admin WAS considering not letting it happen at all, so we are grateful to have the fields when we got 'em.

So sorry to conflict with the ACT's, but seems that in the spring there are conflicts no matter WHEN you host your event. Originally the '08 Cup was to be 4/19-20, Passover Weekend, but that was going to affect WAY too many folks, entire teams even, and our administration agreed. The only other choice - and we had to fight for it - was the week prior.

And back to the point of this topic... Hopkins Folks - Paideia sure wishes we had more flexibility to travel more widely, enabling us to apply to your tourney, Seattle's Spring Reign, Pennsbury's event, Madison's Mudbath, Colorado's East Invite, etc., but it's just too difficult to hit more than one significant (air) travel tournament per spring... And even if we could, our administration won't allow us to... rats!

What is exciting, however, is seeing more and more high school tournaments popping up. It used to be Amherst or nothing for high school teams. Now we all have multiple opportunities... How great is THAT!

We do hate standardized tests, though.

How about them West coast boys come to Born to Dive?

Anonymous said...

Seattle Academy only lost 1 player who didnt start from last year. I dont know about the other teams.

Anonymous said...

well the main core of teams all have a program of children coming through. I would say the biggest lost to a team would be the Paideia seniors who left, but Paideia will always be good no matter what. Hopkins lost a couple guys, but they were young last year.....But I am pretty sure North Hills lost noone, and I think USN lost their stud, but it will be a fun tournament

Anonymous said...

programs of children? I'm not sure who you mean by "main core of teams", but, adressing only the east coast, North Hills is almost entirely seniors and Columbia is almost all seniors and juniors. One of the more interesting stories coming out of Paideia Cup will be whether those two teams-which are peaking this year-can beat Paideia and Amherst, two powerhouses fielding their most inexperienced incarnations in years.

Anonymous said...

Michael,

Like to have your team come to the hustle and Amherst as well and the great NW schools. Do what Hopkins does. We fundraise so we can travel to play great teams like Paideia and elsewhere. When the players work hard..it makes it harder for parents to say no. Hope you can reconsider.

Anonymous said...

your misunderstanding anon 5:47, paideia is not ALLOWED to travel more than once because of their school association.

Anonymous said...

Columbia = average at best, North Hills are a skilled group of kids who will def show up to the finals of the CUP. Amherst is more experienced this year then last year, they had mostly juniors on the team last year, and they look ready to play. Hopkins also returns a bunch of young players, and I expect them to make some noise.

Having played, won, and lost against both north hills and columbia this season... I think north hills is better.

Just a voice from the wilderness...

Anonymous said...

And who is this voice from wilderness? There is only one team that has beat columbia all fall which is pennsbury, so if your from pennsbury you should be proud and put your name and team name.

This kind of unsubstantiated speculation is boring. What are people basing their predictions on?

Anonymous said...

I dont know how strong teams are gonna be because of the ACT. I know that some kids (Hopkins) are trying to take it at Emory in Georgia. Hopefully there will be no excuses and it will be a great tournament.

Anonymous said...

they are basing it solely on last year's performance

guessing outcomes based on previous events isn't always the best idea (see WWI) but...

Paideia is supposedly always strong, I can't confirm that because everything revolved around Amherst the past few years. They've lost their main talent but maybe they'll have some stars itching to step up and be the next Paideia line.

Amherst....why bother saying anything. They always come back with a team and have the best resources (large selection of people wanting to play as well as a well known program) that a school could possibly have. They claim last year as a fluke year where they were "rebuilding". So let's see what they've built.

North Hills hasn't lost players and assuming they aren't sleeping 24/7 they can only get better. This is their final year and they have a fair amount of stars that seem to keep their cool(most of the time) in every situation.

Columbia always seems to pull some crazy kids out. Some of them you wouldn't expect to be amazingly fast but it just so happens that way. They have a strong background and should make a running for whatever they attempt.

Can't speak for West...

Anonymous said...

I really feel like this website just always hates on Columbia.. No one on North Hills can cover Zander, or Brian Walters, and they are really gonna make some noise.

Anonymous said...

Isaac^^

sorry my Pittsburgh friends, but i think it may be true

Anonymous said...

For that matter people don't give enough respect to Pennsbury. After losing over half their team they still managed to overcome both Columbia and North Hills this fall. A lot of the credit for that goes to Isaac and his throws, but as much goes to the new crew of kids hes helped bring in this year. Expect big, big things. It's going to be an exciting year in the East.

Seeding at a tournament like this doesnt matter. Most teams coming to this tournament will always be a 1 or 2 seed outside of the cup. In order to advance towards the final you must win at least two games, so the question comes down to who wouldnt you want to play and why.
4 best teams at the cup and why:

1- Paideia, underestimated because they lost so many seniors who were so important to the team, but their new young guns have filled (Terry's, Kale). Last year most of the attention went to the big name players(Honderd,Stubbs,Lindsley), but every Paideia contributed and played their role, which made Paideia so good last year. Paideia will be good again this year, with most of the attention going to their studs, their team will be great as a whole.

2-North Hills- Athleticism and chemistry is the two words that best describe North Hills. They have played together for a while now, and always find a way to score.....and they are good guys despite what everyone says. Ben Funk and Alex thorne have great chemistry and throws, and Connor(I think thats his name, or Colin) who would be a great matchup against Zander to anon 8:04. They are both great receivers who are devastating to teams deep and in the air.

3- Hopkins, Wow, they really sucked last year, but I think they will be great this year. Greg Arenson, and Sam Brickwatever? are two great players who will make big plays for their team. Hopkins young guns(Shapiro,Gottliebs) will also be mismatches for a lot of teams. Besides the standout players, Hopkins can be best described as a team with heart, they will never stop playing no matter how far out of the game it seems.

4- Amherst, the Lakers of Junior Ultimate. No matter how many studs they lose, they always replace it with someone or something else. Last year it seemed Amherst played a conservative game, they didnt have the studs to rely on, and so the brilliant Tina Booth created a new strategy that dominated highschool ultimate again. Now with some of their young players mature from last season, Amherst will have kids who seem to get open at will (Wallack). The pool of players and superior coaching of Amherst makes them one of the top teams every year, and it wont be any different this year at the cup.

Writing up three other teams because I disagree with Shacklebolt's four.

Seattle Academy--A team making its first credible run at a Western's championship, looking to fill the void left by the dominating 2007 Northwest School class. Featured player is Jimmy Hooper. Look for his great hucks and ability to reset the disk at need. Expect an army of faceless but talented recievers.

Columbia--A team that has retained its stars and probably has the best premier players of anyone at the Cup. Contrary to previously said, no one on the coast can cover Zander if last year is any evidence. Also has a tendency to show up flat at big games.

University School of National--A fifth place finisher along with North Hills last year, but North Hills has fared better as far as losses are concerned. They've lost their stars and we'll see how the program holds up at Paideia.

I heard there may be Canadian teams at the Hustle. Anyone have Ultimate experience with the Canucks?

Anonymous said...

SJR (St. Johns's Ravencourt) has sent in a bid to the hustle.
SJR is a team out of Winnipeg. They are a very solid team and have been for the multiple years now. They also participated at Paideia last year. Every year SJR puts on a tournament (hold back the snow) this year they were runner ups (hopkins being the winner) and last year they won it.

Anonymous said...

They lost every single game at the Paideia Cup last year.

Anonymous said...

Nope. whupped up on hopkins...

Anonymous said...

Definitely did not woop on hopkins it was a good game

Anonymous said...

well....hopkins wasn't much of anything last year either, so thats not really a valid point.

Anonymous said...

Hopkins is a bunch of punks. People always talk about how good they are, but they had one good year with all those seniors. The tournament is a great idea, but no one is going to fly to farm land to play a back bracket western team. Hopkins is a bunch of punks, and people will realize that they suck when Paideia comes around.

Anonymous said...

Gosh, come to the Hustle and show everyone. We'd like the competition and we could learn more about SOTG from you. :)

Hey anonymous 12:42 if you are going to trash talk at least have the guts to post your name.

As the TD of the Hustle, I encourage all teams who would like some good game to come out to the Hustle and compete.

We as the entire Hopkins community (players, coaches, parents, local businesses) are very excited about this tournament. We hope to have a great, competitive, and spirited event that will bring out the best in Youth Ultimate.

Bids are still available, so if your team is interested in playing in our tournament, you can download a bid at http://hopkinshustle.googlepages.com

Hey everyone,
keep in mind that the hustle is not a co-ed tournament, and that the Hopkins girls would love to get some good competition. It will be a great experience for every girls team, no matter what your skill level may be.

And ladies....bring your guys along:)

Anonymous said...

thanks for proving my points punks, you got the best college team in the nation to come play at your tournament, and you still are asking for more bids because noone wants to come play you...

predicted scores for Paideia:

Paideia v Hopunks
15-1
Columbia v Hopunks
15-2
North Hills v Hopunks
15-0

Have fun not even scoring double digits at Paideia punks.

wow anonymous, you sure are clever. so clever that i think no one else cares what you have to say on here, unless you want to send in a bid for the hustle, which is really what this blog is all about. and apparently you aren't interested. thanks for your input though, so clever!

haha I dont go to North Hills, and they will be the best team at Paideia, wow you Minnesotans are dumb, first you post about how North Hills is the only good team coming to your tournament, and now you ask me if I am from there, What idiot would talk smalk about a tournament he is attending. You keep posting, but noone is going to replay to Hert force#24 because you all are punks.

Umm. Is some administrator going to remove these comments? Because they're offensive and not at all helpful. Also, as someone who played Hopkins at Paideia last year and is impressed with Heritage's Terminus win, I have to say that there will be no easy games at this tournament for anyone.

Anonymous said...

These posts are getting absolutely ridiculous. Who ever keeps posting these vulgar and offensive comments are way out of line and abusing what is supossed to be a positive form of communication. I am embarrassed that someone who is extreemely ignorant and judgmental participates in the sport that i have learned to love because of the sense of community ive felt from my teammates and my from opponents. Honestly, who ever you are, if you are trying to prove some point (which to me is still unclear) at least have the guts to post your name. That way people will know your serious because right now you look like a coward. Also, who ever is saying "nigger" and all of the rest of those hateful comments, needs to realize that this is a public blog that EVERYONE can see. I am black, and when that comment was made, I can't even describe the anger that i felt. No one should have to read that, ever. Thats completely fine if you think hopkins players are a bunch of punks - then don't come to the Hustle. because ill tell you right now, that attitude and behavior will NOT be acceptable at this tournament.

Honestly, I'm a bit dumbfounded by the discourse on this site. The Ultimate community is built on a foundation of respect - it's what makes the sport and community surrounding the sport so much fun to be a part of.

This kind of talk destroys the fabric of our community. It's easy for the few adults on this site to dismiss this as "kids being kids." But I think we should expect respectful discourse by teenagers. Anything less is setting the bar too low.

If you can't handle these expectations please find another community that doesn't expect you to be responsible for yourself.
