does anyone else know what juniors are trying out and where they are from

From those returning players I believe that Kapinos is too old but Ollie Honderd is young enough.

Also in the mix:
Alex Thorne and Ben Funk (North Hills)

You are eligible.

I know that minnesota will have some kids coming out. myself, greg arenson and possibly a few more hopkins guys and eric johnson from cathedral will be coming out. i'd keep an eye out for hopkins and cathedral at westerns this year.

alex evangelides from carlton will be trying out, but it will be hard for him to make the team because as somebody said earlier, they only accept a few graduated players. It is really expensive to try out. I know it would be fun to represent your country and for braggin rights, but if you're good enough to play worlds than you are good enough to make an adult club team and play for them for less money but = competition.

Unknown said...

You are all assuming you get invited. There will probably be twice as many people submitting applications this year as last year. Better hope they increase the number of tryouts.

Anonymous said...

Cost wise - going to try-outs costs about what going to a club tournament costs or a two day intense Ultimate camp - it's the cost of a plane flight and a little more. For try-outs the UPA works to help you with housing and transportation but you have to pay the try-out fee (which is higher than your share of a tournament fee), but at a tourney you fly to you typically have to pay for housing, food and a rental car. All in all it's about the same.

If you're selected to attend, and you can afford it, I would certainly attend try-outs over going to any club tournament because it is a unique experience to play with 40 of the top 80 players our age in the country.

As for the cost of Worlds itself - it's basically the cost of any weeklong tourney. And you're representing your nation, competing for a world title with the best players our age in the country!

There is no way I would turn down either opportunity if I could afford it (and certainly not in favor of going to a club tourney).

Ummm.... club nationals? or junior tryouts? hard question... actually not really.

lets not forget the west coast seattle ballers. Jacob Janin, Jimmy hooper, Matt rehder, and julian cw will tear it up

Anonymous 3:15....really?

If you're good enough to play Club Nationals at 18 or 19 you are also good enough to make the US Juniors team (see: Jacob Janin, George Stubbs, Grant Lindsley).

And you are also good enough to play at Club Nationals when you are 20-30 probably.

Playing for (and trying out for) a US National team with the best players our age in the country that competes at a WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP is a unique and incredible experience. And if Club Nationals and US Junior Team Try-outs were ever a conflict such that a player had to make a choice, the choice for me would be hands down US Juniors Team try-outs.

Anonymous said...

Lets assume I am accepted and plan to try out. For myself, I will have to take a plane to Atlanta (probably). I am going to neglect the UPAA fees cause I would have paid them regardless of if I try out or not. So the min. I would pay to try out is about $365, and the max would be about $515. I don't really fly to ultimate tournaments, and for youth tournaments we ususally stay at aa hosts house (cheap I know), so the aveage cost for an ultimate tournament for me is about $150. So the try out camp is between 2.5x-3.5x ultimate tournaments for me. I know it is much better competition. Let's assume I make the team (cause everybody who trys out wants to make the team). The approximate total is between $1025-$1975. If you add that to the tryout fees it is between $1390-$2490. I know the competition is great and this is a once in a lifetime experience, but I simply can't afford this.

Anonymous 10:59 AM

I just turned 19. Just too old to tryout. I don't like the "turn 20 in 2008 rule." I am in the same graduating class as a lot of people but can't tryout like they can. But I am going to club nationals. I would love to be apart of the junior worlds experience, it is very hard to be 2 months too old to go. So, I guess it is jealousy that I have. I would choose junior worlds, if I could.

Anonymous said...

club worlds or junior worlds?
i wonder how many players will be in that position?

Anonymous said...

which tryout camp is gonna be harder? east or west? advantages/disadvantages for either?

Anonymous said...

are the tryouts in Atlanta and Seattle for sure?

Anonymous said...

Pennsbury beat CHS at RU tourney 15-10. Yet another easy year for pennsbury who is winning easterns again!

Anonymous said...

anon 11:04

There is no way that George Stubbs or any other player eligible for junior worlds will make adult worlds. What are you talking about?

The Pulse said...

Not this year, but it's certainly possible for WUCC 2010.

Also, tryout camps are in Atlanta and Seattle according to the UPA website.

Unknown said...

Club Worlds this year is the WUGC, which if I'm not mistaken, the qualifier for which is this years Club Nationals. The winner in each division (assuming it's an American team) gets to be Team USA. So yes, there is a chance that Grant and Stubbs, or some other Junior Worlds eligible players (perhaps in Mixed or Womens) make Club Worlds. It would take quite a few upsets for Chain to win, but the outside chance is there. If there are any Juniors players on Shazam Returns, or Fury or Riot, they've got a pretty good chance.

Anonymous said...

your heavily medicated if you think Pennsbury is going to win easterns this year--it's up for grabs.

Anonymous said...

man... 30 teams in philly, 20 ish in jersey, at least 15 in new york, 20-30 in pittsburgh, 15-20 teams in the DC area, more than 50 in the new england area and north...

and the tryouts will be held in atlanta.... home of... paideia?

maybe 10 other teams?

we'll see the numbers of how many players are accepted to try out from where naturally, but just based purely on teams...

it seems like Philadelphia or jersey or even DC would be a much more central location for tryouts - even disregarding the more centrally located teams.

why would they be hosted in atlanta? doesnt seem like this is to the advantage of anyone but paideia.

interesting....

Kyle Weisbrod said...

How about about because it is March and Atlanta has a better chance for good weather than locales further north?

Or that Atlanta has great facilities for try-outs that are easily lined up and a strong community of people near those fields to host try-outs so no one has to stay in hotels if they choose?

Or that Atlanta has the biggest airport in the world and so finding flights at the necessary times is both cheaper and easier?

Or that it has a strong community of coaches to support the try-outs including the past US Juniors Boys Team Coach, the current US Junior Girls Team Coach, and the former Director of Youth Development?

Or that it is a known quantity and so the organizers of the event will have peace of mind that it will be easy to manage?

Nope, probably just Paideia favoritism.

Kyle-

When/where are westerns this year? or if you don't know yet (which i'm assuming you don't since the dates and location are not listed on upa.org) when will you know?

Anonymous said...

The Pulse said...

"How about about because it is March and Atlanta has a better chance for good weather than locales further north?"

No offense, Kyle, but this seems like the only real reason (and it is a big one). EWR, JFK, and LGA are all in/near NY/NJ, and most players from Maine to VA can drive/carpool instead of flying. BVH is closer to Boston/NY. There are plenty of willing hosts in the area as well. You can find three good fields anywhere in the area as well.

Yes, Atlanta is easier to manage and has better weather, but it's also much more expensive for a lot of people.

Anonymous said...

is it true that only 3 players from one high school team can make the worlds team?

Kyle Weisbrod said...

I don't know about Westerns - I'm no longer on UPA staff so am not privy to those types of conversations. Although, as a Board member, I'll check in with Will and Meredith at Nationals this weekend and see where they are in the process and/or what the hold up is. Considering the goal is to get that information out a year in advance - it is very late for it (of course anyone can call or e-mail staff and ask what is up with that - but since you've asked me, I'll go ahead and do it).

There is no limit on the number of players from one high school team that can make the Worlds team, although if there are two equal caliber players and only one can be chosen, the coaches have in the past favored players who have no teammates already on the team.

And to the Pulse - I'll respectfully disagree. I think you are right that the airport issue isn't a big deal - but I think that knowing the facilities and the support structure is probably a big weight off Meredith's chest. She knows that Michael and I will do what needs to get done to make it as easy as possible for her, that Paideia will be easy to work with, and that the parents will be easy to get in touch with. I don't doubt that there are facilities, organizers, and families in other parts of the East Coast that would do the job, but would you want to take the chance that one of those would fall through?

Anonymous said...

who from nws is gonna be trying out? any thoughts?

Anonymous said...

who do you think is going to be trying out on the womens side?

Anonymous said...

I think more than 3 from one high school can make it, see 2006, although maybe this doesnt count cuz a couple of us had graduated at that point, but

Drew Johnson

none of those people can tryout. they are too old.

Anonymous said...

that is not shannon's point. she was simply showing how more than three players from one school had played on the worlds team. in 2006.

Anonymous said...

the rule about age is lame. what about people who turn twenty after the tournament but before 08.

Anonymous said...

who are the top from the east coast?

Anonymous said...

To Anon 4:09-
This was also addressed on RSD, and the reason given (which is disappointing to me-- I turn 19 a month and a half before the deadline) is that not all Worlds are necessarily in the northern hemisphere, and therefore not necessarily in the summer. Using the year cutoff is easier to keep the same every cycle.
-Brenna Hokanson

P.S. Matty Zemel and Hylke Sneider (CO Cutthroat '07) are both trying out (assuming, of course, that they're invited to try out). And on the girls' side: Sarah Davis (Colorado Academy-- don't know who they are?... wait for Westerns).

Anonymous said...

quit bitching.. if your too old now you weren't good enough to make the team when you were OF age.. go play club.

Anonymous said...

Ok, I'm not quite sure how differing seasons is a justification, but my judgment may be a little cloudy because this topic hits fairly close to home for me. Anon 12:15 was just rude. I miss the cutoff by 9 days (my birthday is Dec 22, 1988), which seems ridiculous to me. I think that being under 20 at the time of the tournament would make more sense. Again, my views on this topic are obviously biased.

No matter when the cutoff is, someone will be just short. As long as the cutoff is consistent every year, it's fair to everyone. Deal with it.

Anonymous said...

Why the animosity? It's a great experience, and the way it's set up (NOT complaining, just saying) has some kids too young (physically and experience-wise) on their first chance, and too old on their second. It's not an issue of being good enough either time; youth ultimate doesn't deal in "good" and "bad" so much as experienced and inexperienced.

Again, I'm not complaining, I'm just justifying the frustration that some excellent players feel about this.

Well, there was just a ton of talk on this thread about people not being able to try out because of a very small margin of time... maybe the sophomore is a) good enough, and b) knows that he won't be able to try out again.

A revision- Hylke Sneider (cover boy from the '06 YCC issue of the UPA mag) is not trying out. Matty Zemel (just made Mamabird as a freshman) is.

This site has become little more than a joke. People are treating it like their own little gossip/insult blog. While i don't believe that everyone needs to sign their own name, i do believe that people should have to register, and have a specific screen name, so at the very least we can see if people are posting multiple times. Not to mention this topic originally was just asking who was applying for junior worlds. On that note.

As much as I hate it, I have to agree. I love youth ultimate, but when you give a bunch of kids the chance to voice their opinion anonymously (therefore with no fear of retribution), all you're going to get is a bunch of childish name calling. Nevertheless, there is still a lot of good, worthwhile discussion that goes on here, and to preserve the dignity of the site, I hope that whoever runs it will disallow anonymous posting. I've said it before and I'll say it again: if you don't want to put your name and reputation behind something you're posting, YOU SHOULDN'T BE POSTING IT. Stand by what you have to say.

dude anonymous posting is the only thing that keeps this site interesting. i personally think they should only allow anonymous posts and ban anyone who gives their name (seriously didn't your mothers ever tell you to not put your name on the internet). there is no other venue for little kiddies from all over the country to trash talk each other without ever having to face any kind of consequences. don't shut down the anonymous posts they're all that keeps this site interesting.

Its pretty unfortunate that the two tryout dates are during two of the Collegiate Championships Series Tournaments, The Stanford Invite and Centex.

Any freshmen on the teams competing at these events won't be able to try out for junior worlds.
