Rutger's University High School Invitational

I always think it's fantastic when non-Youth programs reach out in a big way. I would love to see more college programs put on events like this.

Rutgers University is proud to present its first High School invitational tournament on October 13-14, 2007.

We will host 12 juniors teams for pool play on Saturday and bracket play on Sunday. All teams are guarenteed 7 games. Food and water will be provided. The tournament will include quality competition against other juniors teams, plus the chance to learn about Rutgers and the Rutgers men's Ultimate team.

Bids are due by Friday, September 21st. Teams will be notified of acceptance by Friday, September 28th. The tournament fee is due on Friday, October 5th. Checks should be made out to "Rutgers, the State University".

Please email bids to ru.tournament AT gmail.com with the subject line "ARJI 07". Please include the name of your team's high school, your team's name, spring '07 results, expected team strength in spring '08, and a brief team bio. Housing may be available to teams coming from considerable distances; if your team will need housing, please indicate the number of people (players, parents, and coaches) and for which nights (Friday, Saturday, or both) you will need it. Please bear in mind that we cannot commit to providing housing for teams, but will try to accomodate you if we can.

From Exit 9 with love,
Machine Ultimate

new jeresy may not be a weak region for long with youth leagues, tourneys and stuff.

Anonymous said...

since when was new jersey ever a weak region?

Anonymous said...

all they have is Columbia, Watchung, and Princeton for good teams. Thats pretty weak compared to say massachusetes or PA who have tons of great teams.

Anonymous said...

can you believe it, we get juniors competition AND the chance to learn about rutgers mens ultimate included in the tournament!?!? ! how spectacular, i must get this bid out tomorrow!!

who is casey baitman...?

"They have Columbia, Princeton, Watchung compared to Masachusetes or PA who have tons of great teams."

Mass- Amherst and Needham who else is "great"?

PA-Pennsbury and North Hills who else is "great"?

New Jersey gets a bad rap but really the youth teams in that state do just as well as most youth teams you have a few top teir teams and then some average teams who go up and down.

The biggest obstacle to competitiveness in NJ has been recruitment and retention of players. Every single team has produced individual players who were great, many of whom have gone on to play at top college programs. The problem is that they don't have consistent teams around them, and competition in the state suffers for it. The only teams that have so far reached consistent numbers are Columbia and Watchung, although Ridgewood and Westfield look like they are building programs as well (and Princeton had good numbers for a few years). Basically, the teams that had coaches were able to maintain despite turnover, with a few exceptions on both sides.

So NJ has been inconsistent (other than Columbia), but not weak. We've seen the inevitable rise and fall of team strength all over. With youth leagues and consistent, competitive tournaments, you will see NJ step up over the next few years.

I totally and completely agree. Keep up the good work and I hope the tournament goes well!

this tournament sounds like a good idea. except....it's Rutgers. No self respecting juniors player would want to go to Rutgers. The football team is looking up, but it has one of the worst frisbee teams in the country. Last year they couldn't even make it to Regionals.

Anonymous said...

i second that. go PURPLE HAZE.

Anonymous said...

lol. Purple Haze is one of the few teams worse then rutgers.

The landscape of Ultimate in the Metro East changes rapidly. With the growth of juniors Ultimate in MA, PA, NJ, etc, you will see the Metro East become much more competitive than it has been in the past. Rutgers Ultimate just had its largest recruitment class ever, and hopes/expects to do it again this year. We were a young team. Watch what happens.

I was a self-respecting juniors player, and now I am a self-respecting college player.

Anonymous said...

back to the previous arguement. Columbia is the only team that is on the caliber of say needham/pennsbury. Watchung and Princeton are both good programs and nasty teams but I wouldn't say they're at that level...yet

Anonymous said...

That's true. Watchung and Princeton aren't on the same level as the other teams discussed: Needham, Pennsbury, Amherst, North Hills, etc. So New Jersey has one very good team compared to other Eastern regions two or three. Same with Atlanta.

Brown University was one of the worst college teams in the country. Bunch of amazing high schoolers went there and brought it to the top.

Why not other schools?

Props to Rutgers for stepping up and recognizing the need for additional high school tournaments in the fall.

Anonymous said...

"back to the previous arguement. Columbia is the only team that is on the caliber of say needham/pennsbury."

Columbia is a far better caliber team than Needham. Last years Needham team was the only one to break out of years of obscurity and failure...and still Columbia beat them in the fall and spring. Needham was a one hit wonder, and will win zero big games while Columbia will once again make it to the semis or finals of Easterns.

...i have no problem with Pennsbury, they have proved themselves in more than one season.

gapoole said...

Incidentally, Needham wasn't just a random one-hit wonder. I met a few of those guys at the inaugural session of JEM camp, and I'm sure more went next year. It doesn't take much for a juniors team to step up--you take some dedicated athletes and teach them how to play, they'll do well. Columbia is definitely a more consistent program, but both teams play very well when they get hungry for it. I have a lot of respect for them.

Not for the CHS zone O, though. I hear they suck at that.

Anonymous said...

glenns right on that. COlumbia zone O is mad whack. They got wrecked by amhersts zone twice.

Anonymous said...

"both teams play very well when they get hungry for it".

The point wasn't that needham wasn't good. The point was that they had one or two good classes while Columbia has been strong in the past and will continue to be strong in the future.

Anonymous said...

can someone from columbia tell me how they recruit so many good athletes? i thought frisbee was for losers

Anonymous said...

Ok. First of all lets just get it out in the open, Glenn Poole you suck at ultimate. You played on a horrible team in high school, i repeat horrible. Did you ever win a state championship? Ever play in a big game? Now you play for Rutgers, one of the worst teams in a notoriously poor region. You couldn't even make it to REGIONALS!!!!!! jesus christ. I heard you're also playing for an awful coed team. Until you win ONE big game, play in one meaningful tournament, play on one serious team. Just shut your mouth, no one gives a damn about your opinion.

Anonymous said...

yes, dear anonymous, because only those who play at elite levels may have opinions?

metro east a bad region?

pitt - 9th
del - beat florida

pitt 4 years ago didnt make regionals, the next year they were at nationals.

things change quickly in a sport w/o recruiting incentive, little if any scholarship $$, and little real world glory.

it seems though that poole is doing something not only positive for his school, his ultimate program but also for high school ultimate in general.

perhaps before gracing us with your opinion you should let us know what you have done for high school ultimate lately, or at least your name.

sincerely,
anonymous.

Anonymous said...

Columbia is not good, just like the rest of NJ. Their Zone O is awful, their man O is awful, their defense is lacking. They don't get athletes, they have one guy who can do everything. Which is why they never win the big games.

Glen,

You have your thoughts, everyone does, but I would think that if you are running a tournament to help boost ultimate numbers at your school you would not talk badly about the way a team plays. Saying one teams "zone offense sucks" is not a smart move esp when they are players who live in the state and could easily be your teammates someday.

To make a comment like that Glenn shows you are immature and still have a lot to learn.

Chris

I think that if Rutgers played CHS, CHS would win zone or no zone.

Anonymous said...

Jake,

I know! columbia sucks so much JUST LIKE the rest of new jersey! I mean an awful zone o, an awful man o, lacking defense, and one good player is certainly the key to winning 7 straight state titles against new jersey team which are "just like" them! (How has this kid been eligible for seven straight years?) The same thing goes for getting 2nd and 3rd at two out of the three easterns championships. I mean that's pathetic! If they want to start being looked at as a successful team they should really start getting a couple of athletes and maybe a second "guy who can do everything"

sincerely,

anonymous

Wow, some controversy. A few rejoinders, if I may:

Anonymous 9/4 11:07pm I never disagreed with that.

Anonymous 9/5 12:24am I assume you are being facetious...

Anonymous 9/5 1:08am I think it's humorous that you don't see the absurdity of your post. It just makes you into a bigger fool.

Anonymous 9/5/2:06am has some sense...

Jake, CHS is very good. They have good players, a good coach, a good record against quality teams, they don't lose games they shouldn't, and they've done well over the course of the past several years. I have respect for the program, and tons of respect for many of the individuals on the team, many of whom are excellent or at least solid players. They do have athletes, and they also have class--despite their traditional attitude toward SOTG.

Chris, I'd like to apologize. I forget that online, people aren't able to interpret statements the way they normally would be able to, where inflection and other properties of language have been lost. I was trying to give a ribbing, so to speak, to the CHS players that I know read this blog site. Notice how I've praised the CHS players and program repeatedly over my last few comments--juxtaposing those comments with the one about zone O, I had hoped that most people would realize I was joking. I think the CHS guys would have realized it, but I look like a jerk to anybody who doesn't know me, so I apologize. I would love the opportunity to play in a Rutgers vs CHS game, and when we do we shall see what happens.

Anonymous said...

Look, Glenn you ARE entitled to your opinion. It's just pathetic to me that you still care so much about juniors ultimate. "despite their traditional attitude toward SOTG." what is that? why can't you just shut your mouth, and realize that youre IN COLLEGE. Here's my thought. If you add up the number of games you won at regionals, the number of games you won at club regionals, the number of state championships you won, the number of games you played at centex, and if this number is zero. Then your opinion is completely worthless and you should focus more on improving on that number, rather then writing mindless dribble on a juniors gossip website.

This website exists for two kinds of people.

1. Juniors Ultimate players
2. Non-juniors who care about juniors Ultimate (i.e. alumni, parents, coaches, facilitators, etc)

I formerly belonged to category 1, and now belong to category 2. I see nothing wrong with wanting to devote my time and energy to Ultimate or youth Ultimate in particular. Why do you hate the fact that I am interested in this sport for more than selfish reasons? I care about more than my individual record, about more than the team I am playing for this particular season. Who are you to judge what I should focus on as a person? I genuinely care about the future of this sport. My opinion as a former participant and current organizer certainly does matter.

What is pathetic to me is that you still refuse to include your name with your comments. What are you afraid of? What are you so upset about?

"Despite their traditional attitude toward SOTG" was another friendly poke in the ribs for CHS. In my personal opinion, some of the team's former players were unconcerned about SOTG, or at least had an entirely different concept of SOTG than the one I had when my team played theirs.

Anonymous said...

Glenn is right about the SOTG and Columbia, everyone knows they played that way(years ago). Columbia is sick, has a sick program, and is also as Glenn said, a classy team (these days). Rutgers had a bad year, but historically they're not terrible. Everyone hating on Glenn is taking this way to seriously, he was clearly just bustin some chops and everyone got all ridiculous. Anyone can post on this website, don't get so upset.

-Isaac Saul

oh and the people posting anon and talking smack, you're pretty ridiculous. it was funny for like the first 2 weeks the site was up, now its just obnoxious.

true, we can't all be as classy as pennsbury and steal other teams warmup jackets.

if you are interested in bringing your college team to a tournament that
promises to cram as many games as possible into one weekend.....please
consider The Collegiate Fall Championships in Greenville NC Nov 3 & 4.

it's a great opportunity to provide tons of playing time for your new
recruits....a perfect opportunity to get them HOOKED on ultimate and hooked
on your team.

Collegiates starts as a 16 team tournament.......and after 3 pool games,
becomes TWO brand new tournaments of 8 teams each. This format provides
continually more equally matched competition as the weekend progresses,
which to me, is a great concept.

9 games for 4 teams....Finals in the 1st place and the 9th place brackets.
8 games for 8 teams....
7 game minimum for all 16 teams.

ECU has some sweet fields....and there will be night games under the lights
for each team on Sat afternoon.

invitations will be extended 5 weeks prior to the tournament...which is
about Sept 10th-ish.
the comp looks fun and competitive right now....
....bring your boys!

contact me with interest.

not a single contributor is still in high school.

this is about as pure as ultimate journalism gets, not one "reporter" or commenter is playing in the division they are talking about.

mmm perspective.

All the Pennsbury kids knew about it at the latest on the plane when they were leaving Atlanta and all talking about it - they were overheard by a player from another team on their flight. They didn't fess up to it until they were called out on stealing the clothes three weeks later at the amherst invite.

also, fyi, Needham wasn't a one hit wonder. In 2003 they had a solid season, getting a ton of experience and only losing one main player to graudating. In 2004, they were top 10 in the country with seniors that have been playing for Mamabird and the Hodags for 3 years. Yes, they had a rebuilding year after that in 2005 and sucked, but in 2006 the team went back up to top 25 in the country, and last year had a huge year finishing in 7th or 8th (it keeps switching) and getting 3rd at easterns. One hit wonder, I think not. It's just an up and down program with rebuilding years in between their successful ones. Definitely not as consistent as programs like Columbia or Amherst, and they won't be nearly as good as either of those teams next year, but they aren't off the map. Look out for them in another year or two.

Ray, people will come Ray. They'll come to Iowa for reasons they can't even fathom. They'll turn up your driveway not knowing for sure why they're doing it. They'll arrive at your door as innocent as children, longing for the past. Of course, we won't mind if you look around, you'll say. It's only $20 per person. They'll pass over the money without even thinking about it: for it is money they have and peace they lack. And they'll walk out to the bleachers; sit in shirtsleeves on a perfect afternoon. They'll find they have reserved seats somewhere along one of the baselines, where they sat when they were children and cheered their heroes. And they'll watch the game and it'll be as if they dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thick they'll have to brush them away from their faces. People will come Ray. The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh... people will come Ray. People will most definitely come.
