One of the major factors in the blowout of finals (after the same match up went to universe point on saturday), was how tired many of Colorado's starters were after a hard fought win against last years champs Seattle. I personally almost threw up on a Philly player (sorry about that by the way). Congratulations to Philly for their sweet win though. Their hucks seemed to be guided into the receivers hands. I believe only one huck went unreceived.

On another note. In Colorado's first year at YCC both their Open and Women's teams finished 2nd after having been seeded 7th and 4th respectively.

When you put together the pieces of the previous two posts, you begin to see how Philly pulled out the win. Both of the semis were extremely closely contested. Colorado obviously played a huge game to take out Seattle, and Philly had a pretty epic semi against Pittsburgh, too. From my perspective, it seemed like the difference between Saturday's matchup and Sunday's matchup between the two finalists was Philly's depth.

On Saturday, both teams were fresh, and the game was basically a draw, with Philly pulling out universe point. By Sunday, the top Colorado guys looked pretty tired (as attested to by Harrison) while the top Philly players were just hitting their stride. The difference, in my opinion, was the number of contributers for Philly.

Obviously, the five Pennsbury guys were huge on both lines, along with Wissahickon's Kyle Baynes anchoring the handlers and Dave Kelly and Aman Nalavade causing havoc deep. CB East's Art Shull pulled in a ton of deep shots and played most of the deep defense for Philly's zone. Eddie Peters usually picked up the toughest matchup defensively, while Ryan Bleam had an amazing all around tournament. What's more, folks like Lower Merion's Gabe Freidman absolutely dominated a few of the points, making sure the featured handlers had plenty of rest on Saturday.

Basically, Philly's rotation went 19 deep all the way up to the semis. I don't think that was just a nice luxury, I'm pretty sure that's what won the tournament for SEPDA.

Kelly could finally go deep because he didn't have to play savage in a handler-weak team.

I am curious if the guys from Cartoon Network filmed the hotly contested call in the Philly vs. Pitt game.

Tied at 11s, Pittsburgh's Jay Huerbin had a layout D in the endzone on Dave Kelly, Kelly, then made a spectacular grab dragging his feet on the line to try to stay in bounds while making an amazing catch. Then the two teams from PA argued for about 20 minutes over whether Kelly was in bounds (making it a score for Philly) or a turnover.

The camera men from Cartoon Network seemed to be filming the entire thing, perhaps they saw what happened.

Wait ... there were no linespeople or observers in the semis of a national championship?

you would have to request observers but we didnt take the time do to so. The catch was awesome and was most deffinatly in!!!

In regards to the cameramen from CN (and about 2 or 3 other random cameramen), they began to film the argument about 10 minutes in. So, they only caught the last half of the dispute, and not the actual catch.

Pittsburgh had been filming all the games, and when the Pittsburgh vs. Philadelphia game was reviewed later that night, the endzone D and catch were about a foot off the screen, so there is no evidence there.

If anybody has a picure or anything of the catch, I'd really like to take a look at it.

I would be interested in anyone's comments about the overall spirit and sportsmanship of the tournament. Anyone?

Spirit wise Colorado had a great experience. The lowest we gave was a 3, simply because we didn't see anything exemplary. I think all the teams were incredibly spirited and I believe there was never more than 1-2 calls in a game that i disagreed with. Great spirit all around.

Hey Alex, was Art Shull wearing Brian Nevison's jersey in the finals? That would explain why that was wrongly attributed.

No, Art was wearing Art's jersey. Brian's jersey was tucked safely in my suitcase. I imagine they just mis-read the number off of Art's back... .

It looks as though they have it all fixed, though.
