weekend tournament open thread (april 8/9 edition)

courtesy of score reporter...

2nd Annual East Invite in Colorado
Ridgefield Invitational in Connecticut
PHUEL All-Star game was this weekend i believe as well? Actually from what i hear there were TWO all-star games, one featuring the best players from around the league battling each other, and a second game between the top PHUEL players and the OLD SAG masters team. Dubbed the "Diapers vs. Depends" by PHUEL organizers, i believe it is the second annual game of its type.

speaking from experience last year - SAG rolled us 21 to 5 i believe? im pretty sure we didnt break double digits, and im pretty sure SAG didnt break a sweat. I'm interested to hear how it turned out this year.

im sure we will have recaps rolling in from our contributors very soon, but in the mean time consider this an open thread to talk about all things ultimate... from the last weekend.

ARHS played in our only two-day college tournament of the season. Pool play scores:
ARHS over UVM 13-2
" " Williams 13-6
" " Dartmouth 13-6
" " McGill 13-8
" " Northeastern 13-7
Quarters we played Northeastern again and won 13-3
We played Tufts in the semis and went up on them 7-1 and won at cap 9-8
In the finals we played UMass and were down 8-4, got within 1 at 13-12 and lost 15-12.

Next up . . .
Paideia Cup.

Beating those college teams is really impressive. Those are some of the top contenders in the region!

PHUEL all-star game had to be moved from Saturday to Sunday due to inclement weather. So, some schools missed out a chance to send their guys. Either way, it would not have helped, as OLD SAG ripped straight through the kids after an early run at keeping it close.

Why,Ryan? I guess I know generally why, and the only reason we get into this tournament is because our alums are running it, but can't you get any games with local colleges? I have some suggestions for getting into college tourneys if you want them.

Ryan,

It took some convincing to get Northwest School into the college tournament that we played in last year. (We played again this year) -PLU BBQ.

In the end what got us in was my promise that the HS team I coached was good enough to compete (we lost in the semi's last year and the quarters this year). It also helped that as the coach I was extremely responsible in getting our paperwork and payment in and that is something that all tournament directors appreciate. And finally, I made the argument that having a strong high school team at a college tournament is a good recruiting tool for the colleges attending.

Hope this helps.

Great suggestions, Mike!
I would also add that your team will clean up some extra sidelines of litter, show up on time, not go to the party (saving money and liablity for the college host), and give a gift to the TD. We usually give a disc and shirt and write a thank-you note or post something postive on rsd. That makes a high school team stand out in contrast to most college teams and, once you get in, they are more likely to invite you the following year.

Ryan,

Another useful idea would be to host a mini-tournament. Get two fields right next to each other. Get three college teams in your area and schedule one day three-round round robin.

One note about preperation to play college teams. When we play in the PLU-BBQ, it is usually our first games of the season and the college teams we are playing are 2 or 3 months into their season, so we are at a big disadvantage. But the point for us is to get games and see where we stand and what we need to work on.
