Easterns and Westerns Open Thread

so the deadlines are very quickly approaching, if your high school team wants to travel to Pittsburgh or Boulder, CO this May for the premier tournaments in the united states you had better get your stuff together quick.

applications are due in 16 days!! who has applied? who is going to? who are the shoe ins? stuff is hitting the fan in the high school ultimate world and thus an open thread to talk about it.

(psss - keep it quiet but playultimate is about to hit their 10,000th visitor - thank you!)

Alameda applied the first day the applications were available. I heard that Castro Valley has applied as well (very exciting).

I've also heard that Colorado is going to break out some really good/ new teams that look to throw things off balance. what's the word on that? Truth?

The Lakewood (Colorado) high school women's team has already (or plans to) put in a bid for Westerns in Boulder, CO.

The Hopkins Captains are working on applications for both open and womens sides. we're put into westerns, which is different this year. last year we were at easterns, and in 03, i think the only "western" team we played was from Arizona.

i'm stoked to see the west coast teams and to check out what colorado has as well.

Castro Valley has not, in fact, put in a bid yet. Westerns are the same weekend as Senior Prom for us, so we'll probably wait until the very last day to gauge people's opinions before putting in a bid (or not).

Thank you for saying Princeton is likely in, we hope so too. We'll be applying within a week. Since this will be our first time, I want to ask the more experienced guys whether or not we should get a couple spring season games in before applying.

agreed. As far as colorado putting together an upset team... I'd certainly love to see it. I'm not sure the skill level is there, but if Colorado sends a team, I'll be up in boulder cheering them on.

This is not official, nor for sure, but that should already be known... There are 6 teams looking to submit bids for Westerns from Oregon.

OPEN Teams Applying:
1) Churchill HS (2nd place last year)
2) South Eugene HS (tied for 3rd place last year)
3) Sheldon HS (did not attend last year)
4) Corvallis (tied for 13th place last year, but one of the only teams who came with women)

WOMENs Teams Applying:
1) Churchill HS (5th place last year)
2) South Eugene HS (combined with CHS last year)

Last year there were 10 womens teams at Easterns -- it would be so fantastic to see a full tourney of 16.

Here are last year's teams:

1) Amherst Regional HS, Amherst, MA
2) Amherst Regional HS JV, Amherst, MA
3) Andover HS - A, Andover, MA
4) HB Woodlawn, Arlington, VA
5) Chapel Hill HS, Chapel Hill, NC
6) Memorial HS, Madison, WI
7) Columbia HS, Maplewood, NJ
8) University School of Nashville, Nashville, TN
9) Stuyvesant HS, New York, NY
10) The Beacon School, New York, NY

Does anyone know if any of those teams don't plan on applying this year?

The other teams that I can think of that either are applying or might apply:

St. Johnsbury (I already sent our bid in)

Paidea - Do they have a school event conflict? I think that's why they didn't come last year?

Minneapolis - Is a team going to come down this year?

Is a North Carolina team thinking of coming?

Cincinnati?

Am I missing any possibles?

Hopkins Girls (a.k.a. HERt Force)from Minneapolis will be placing a bid, as well as the Hopkins Boys (HUrt). The UPA has put Minnesota in the West division so...if our bids are accepted, we will be attending Western Nationals.
