Spiking: 7OnTheLine

The UPA just posted the latest in their magazine's "7 on the Line" Survey question... The question is:

Do you view disc spiking as harmless celebration or in bad taste and against Spirit of the Game?

Many of you commented on this subject... I would encourage you to again share your comments with the UPA in their online survey submission. And maybe, just maybe, you'll be put in the magazine...

Well wouldnt the fact that there is going to be an invetibable person on an opposing team that gets upset by a spike make this an unsportsmanlike action..? I really couldnt care less but i do understand that in a close game doing those little things set off some people and therefore you just save em for nationals.

Peaches.

you know, if you act like you've been there before, you won't be held up for ridicule...

there's a time and a place for everything, but going up 5-1 on some team isn't the best time to spike... maybe getting that one when you're down 5? maybe. if your team can feel the energy and capitalize on that, it might be worth it.

but i always think spikers look dumb. and they tend to ruin the disc.

I can understand spikes, emotions for people can run high when they score a game winning, or critical point.

the thing for me is that, i think people should do it after the person you scored on has walked away a bit ... to spare their feelings or what not, i mean, if you got scored on for the game winning point, your self esteem is already down.

thats just me.

I used to be a spikaholic. I have changed my formerly "wicked" ways because I was tired of people complaining about my "bad spirit." I think there is always a time and place for spiking. On a crucial point, or a sick play, spiking is more than acceptable. I have never been offended by someone spiking from the other team. In my opinion a spike is a perfectly valid way of expressing oneself, or firing up one's team. The only spike I have qualms with is if someone spikes it on another player. Plays like that are a sign of the degradation of ultimate. As long as spikes are done with taste, spike on!

I agree that there is a time and a place for spiking. After getting an awesome layout grab in the end zone makes the energy high so it is understandable as long as it isn't a "show it, show it, SPIKE!" However, high school ultimate is never the place for spiking. It does not show younger students good sportsmanship; it does not show parents an attitude that would make them want to have their children play. It is not a good mechanism to teach our youth. There will be plenty of time in college for spiking, do not start early.

I really think it all depends on the spiking you are talking about. Theres harsh evil full speed on your opponents back who just fell down trying to sky you spike and then theres the all in good fun spikes that I am okay with my middle schoolers doing. In no way does it effect the other team or say "suck it, *insert opponents name here*", the others actually think its funny too. Sometimes you can make spikes okay and like you said its all about the time and place...
